Explaining Author’s Reasoning and Evidence CCSS RI.4.8: Explain how an author uses reasons and evidence to support particular points in a text

Imagine that it’s the year 2450. Humans now live on the Moon Imagine that it’s the year 2450. Humans now live on the Moon! But some things don’t change. Most kids want to have pets. And there’s something else that hasn’t changed. The grown-ups usually have to be convinced that a pet is a good idea. Convincing anyone about a point (claim) takes good reasons (ideas) and evidence (facts). Look at the pictures. Think about how each child is asking for a pet. What child is more likely to get a pet? Why?

Both children want a pet, but the girl calmly gives reasons and facts to back up her point. The cart below shows her point, one reason, and two facts she gives. Authors who make points should back them up with good reasons and solid evidence. Studying how authors use reasons and evidence can give you ideas for backing up your own points if you want to convince someone of something.
