Explaining Author’s Reasoning and Evidence CCSS RI.4.8: Explain how an author uses reasons and evidence to support particular points in a text

Imagine that it’s the year 2450. Humans now live on the Moon Imagine that it’s the year 2450. Humans now live on the Moon! But some things don’t change. Most kids want to have pets. And there’s something else that hasn’t changed. The grown-ups usually have to be convinced that a pet is a good idea. Convincing anyone about a point (claim) takes good reasons (ideas) and evidence (facts). Look at the pictures. Think about how each child is asking for a pet. What child is more likely to get a pet? Why?

Both children want a pet, but the girl calmly gives reasons and facts to back up her point. The cart below shows her point, one reason, and two facts she gives. Authors who make points should back them up with good reasons and solid evidence. Studying how authors use reasons and evidence can give you ideas for backing up your own points if you want to convince someone of something.

Let’s practice explaining author’s claims using evidence and reasons using this link below!

Essential Question Exit Ticket What is the difference between reasoning and evidence?

Read the first paragraph of an essay that discusses whether or not people should explore space. Then read and answer the questions. Identify the main point the author makes in this paragraph. What reasons or evidence does the author use to support this point. Use the chart to help you.

In your literacy journal… How can I describe the author’s main point and his supporting reasons or evidences in words?

Continue reading the essay about exploring space Continue reading the essay about exploring space. Then answer the questions. A reason gives an answer to a question that begins with “why”. Evidence is a fact. Can you find a reason for why humans should explore space? Let’s circle any information that seems like a fact.

In your literacy journal… Think about the answer you chose for the question. Provide a written response why that choice is the most specific evidence for the author’s point that humans are competitive.

Essential Question Exit Ticket Why is it important for authors to support their claims using reasoning and evidence?
