Comprehensive Science 1

Complete the following table: ORGAN BODY SYSTEM ORGAN BODY SYSTEM Brain : _____________ Esophagus : _____________ Heart : _____________

Complete the following table: ORGAN BODY SYSTEM ORGAN BODY SYSTEM Brain : Nervous ____ Esophagus : _Digestive ___ Heart : _Circulatory

1.Skeleton: a framework of bone, cartilage, or other material supporting or containing the body of an animal or plant 2.Digestion: breaking down food by mechanical and enzymatic action into substances that can be used by the body 3.Calorie: unit of measurement of the amount of energy in food 4.Detect: to discover the presence of 5.Immunity: protection from infection or toxins 6.Lymphocyte: type of white blood cell that is made in the thymus, the spleen, and bone marrow 7.Nutrient: part of food that is used by the body to grow and survive 8.Protein: long chain of amino acid molecules 9.Vessel: tube in the body that carries fluid such as blood 10.compact bone: hard outer layer of bone

11.Hormone: chemical signal that is released by the organs of the endocrine system 12.Neuron: basic unit of the nervous system; nerve cell 13.Reflex: automatic movement in response to a signal 14.spongy bone: interior region of bone that contains many tiny hole 15.Fertilization: joining of an egg and a sperm 16.Gamete: human reproductive cell 17.Ovum: female gamete 18.Reproduction: process by which new organisms are produced 19.Sperm: Male gamete 20.Zygote: cell that forms when an egg and a sperm join together

Research an assigned body system, create a model of one major organ in that body system and label the parts of that organ Your organ must fit into a standard shoe box The model must be sturdy. Turn this rubric in with your constructed project. Directions for achieving a high grade: 1.Construct your organ in a way that makes the organ easy to identify. 2.Label all the parts of the organ. 3.Write a description of the function of this organ. 4.Explain the purpose of the body system that contains your organ.

You will use your foldables for this activity. 1.We will count up to 10 (then start over) 2.You will move to the table with your number on it. (your expert group) 3.You will draw a body system from the box. 4.This is the body system you and your partner are experts on. 5.You will work together to complete your foldable on the body system that you are an expert on. 6.Use the posters, the class science book, my book, or the flip chart to complete the following information.

Information to include in your foldable: 1.The name of the body system 2.The major role it plays in your body 3.The major organs in the system 4.A labeled diagram of the system and its organs 5.The specific function of the body system When we are done with this,(by the end of next class) you will be returning to your home groups to present your expert information to everyone.
