WHAT IS MEANT BY INTERNET ETHICS?? Internet ethics simply means acceptable behaviour for using internet. Though World Wide Web is a place where values are considered in the broadest sense, we must take care while shaping content and services and we should recognize that internet is not apart from universal society but it is a primary component of it.
WHY INTERNET ETHICS AND FOR WHO ? Property protection Adherence to societal values and morals. Safety Legal issues FOR EVERYONE
HAS ANYONE EVER POSTED SOMETHING ON THE INTERNET THAT OFFENDED YOU? Was it about you? Was it about your family/anyone you know? Or did you just feel it is morally wrong/socially unacceptable? Have you ever posted something that offended someone?
REMINDER: INTERNET ETHICS Protect personal information No cyber bullying Respect copyrights Ensure your safety from viruses Acknowledge and reference information sources Do not be involved cybercrimes Be considerate of what you share on social networks
PERSONAL INFORMATION When you find someone logged on the computer, do not go through their files, LOG THEM OUT. Do not give out personal information for predators or identity thieves to access. Address Phone number School name or location Credit card number Pictures Passwords
CYBERBULLYING Do not send or display offensive or inappropriate messages or pictures. Cyber bullying is using , instant messaging, chat rooms, cell phones, or other technology to harass, threaten, torment, or intimidate someone. Harassment is illegal. Respect others.
DOWNLOADING Don’t open if you don’t know who sent it to you, you could spread a virus. It would be best to delete the message. It is possible to get a virus from someone you know. It is best to purchase a virus scanning software program and update often. Avoid pop-up advertisements.
PLAGIARISM Share your experience of plagiarism? It is a virtue to acknowledge and reference sources of your information. Plagiarism can bring unpleasant consequences
CYBERCRIMES Hackers, crackers and carders Piracy (Respect other people’s property copyrights) Cybercrimes are punishable by law (5 years imprisonment & R fine)
OFFENSIVE POSTS Sexual content Inappropriate settings Bridge of work ethics Violence
Social networking sites –Add only people you know in real life to your friend’s list. –Share what you would like other people to share about you. –Keep in mind—nothing on the internet is private

As students and individuals, you are obliged to adhere to the internet ethics. Sharing offensive content is not caring at all.
