Should Charlie have had the operation? Charlie made the right choice in having the operation Charlie should not have had the operation Choose a side Select your two BEST reasons. Are they global??

Reason #1 Clarification Statement? Example/s (own words) Supporting Quote/s w/ page # (Evidence from the text) Significance of Quote/s (What does this quote show the reader?) Use a complete sentence only if it is a quote. Charlie should/should not have had the operation because... Add transitions – try for 6-8 Use a different color Complete a second map for reason #2

3 Types of Expository to Explain Why Openings Vignette – A vignette is a short sketch or descriptive scene. It usually has a theme or an idea of its own that it wants to convey. The most important function of the vignette is its description of the scene or character. Sample: The matronly lady stood in front of the frozen food display analyzing the pictures on each carton of food. Patiently she waited for a friendly face to approach the frozen food case; then she would begin her charade. “Excuse me, sir, but I left my glasses at home. Could you help me read the ingredients on the carton?” The obliging, unsuspecting customer would read the carton, receive her words of gratitude, and continue on his way. Relieved, she knew her secret would remain safe for a while longer. Alice is one of the growing numbers of adults who cannot read.

4 Types of Expository to Explain Why Openings Rhetorical Question – Can you imagine going through each day without being able to read any of the words around you? Present a Startling Fact – Even though we spend billions of dollars each year on special programs in our schools, we still have students who do not know how to read. Quote a Respected Source – Although her books were written in Braille, Helen Keller said that when she learned to read, the whole world was opened up to her. Pablo Picasso once stated that “every act of creation is first an act of destruction.”

5 Types of Expository to Explain Why Openings Use a Literary Device (simile/metaphor) – Reading is the pathway to worlds beyond our own. Make a General Statement – It is nearly impossible to go through a day in life without the need to use your reading skills. Pose a Challenging Question – Would you be willing to devote some of your time to teaching an adult to read?

Writing an Opening... Hook your reader: Choose one of the 7 strategies Bridge to your prompt: relate your hook to your topic – Charlie Gordon, a 37 year old man with an IQ of 68, who had the first operation to triple his intelligence Introduce the work you are analyzing: Daniel Keyes’ short story, “Flowers for Algernon” Preview what is to come in a thesis statement – Charlie should/should not have had the operation because... 6

Depth of emotion Clarification Statement? Example/s Supporting Quote/s w/ page # Significance of Quote/s This idea became evident when.. Charlie demonstrated this when he.. Charlie should have had the operation because... Opening: Victor Hugo once stated, “What a grand thing, to be loved! What a grander thing still, to love!” Can you imagine never having the intellectual capacity to experience mature, adult love? Such was the case for Charlie Gordon, the main character in Daniel Keyes’ short story, “Flowers for Algernon.” Charlie, a 37 year old man with an IQ of 68 became the first human to have an operation that would triple his intelligence. The operation opened up a new world for Charlie, one that allowed him to experience all that he had been missing, some good and some bad – knowledge, truth, isolation, and yes, even love. Because Charlie was able to experience more emotion than he ever would have with an IQ of 68, he was absolutely correct in making the choice to have the surgery. In other words, the surgery allowed him to experience the emotions of a fully functioning adult rather than a child. This shows that... This is important because... One can clearly see that...

8 Time to orally rehearse with a partner... Notice the words/phrases that you automatically insert when you “talk it off the map.” Partners – write the words that aren’t on the map.

9 Write it off of the map!

10 Writing a Closing... A writer needs to keep in mind that the conclusion is often what a reader remembers best. The conclusion should be the best part of the composition. It should: importance Stress the importance of the opinion statement (thesis). Give the essay a sense of completeness. Leave a final impression on the reader. Synthesize, rather than summarize. Do not simply repeat things that were in your composition. They have read it. Show them how the points you made and the support and examples you used were not random, but fit together. Redirect your readers. Give your reader something to think about, perhaps a way to use your ideas in the “real” world.

11 Expository to Explain Why Closings Triggers Other Options Echo the Introduction Challenge the Reader Looking to the Future Posing Questions A “trigger” is something that gets the interest of the reader; it is something that we all care about. So what? What about this is important? So why? So why does it matter? Make a personal connection. ALWAYS!! SO WHAT? SO WHY?
