Words from a wise thinker “We live in a culture, time, and place where creative people have to use creative means to accomplish something that was always the most ordinary, customary thing in the human experience: older people and younger people sharing their lives,” says Bill Thomas, a doctor and international authority on geriatric medicine and eldercare.

Reweaving the social fabric by Janice Blanchard Service systems can never be reformed so that they will produce care. Care is the consenting commitment of citizens to one another. Care cannot be produced, provided, managed, organised, administered or commodified. Care is the only thing a system cannot produce. Every institutional effort to replace the real thing is a counterfeit. Care is, indeed, the manifestation of community. The community is the site for the relationships of citizens. And it is at this site that the primary work of a caring society must work.

First Question to discuss Residential care Home care Community care What needs to change in all three of these categories for care to feel valued? What will be the new normal? Do you have family close by who can help?

Second question to discuss How are we planning for an increase in caregivers for the industry? Is there a design problem? Education? Process? New ideas?

Third question to discuss How are we going to manage the gap between the rich and the poor? What should the government be doing to plan for the growing numbers? How can we as citizens and industry specialists help?

Leave a legacy George Bernard Shaw Life is no brief candle to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment and I want to make sure it burns as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.
