THE BRAND BUCELLAS The brand was registered in July 1905, about six years before the creation and regulation of the Demarcated Bucelas Region. The history of this brand is closely related to the history of this wine. All the image of the brand Bucellas was carefully thought. The presentation of the Bucellas bottle received from the first hour, the greatest care reflecting a wine of high quality and prestige. The labels, in classic style and forms very refined, were based on golden letters, on a white background, with the presence of gold medals won at major international competitions. Regarding the double "l" in the label, follows the spelling of the time, taking inspiration on the village of Bucelas near Lisbon, which was spelled with double "l" and that remains until this day.

IMAGE BRAND EVOLUTION The first registration of the brand “Bucellas” dates back to 1905, and persisted until today, being a magnificient example of consistency and quality.

The brand “Bucellas” comes from the Bucelas region from the single estate of the Enoport Group in this area – “Quinta do Boição” - Boição Estate ( in the map bellow). ORIGINS

“Quinta do Boição”, Boição Estate  This wine estate has a total area of 32 hectares, of which 24 ha are planted with vineyards.  Of the varietals planted in the Boição Estate, stands out Arinto, which has its cradle in Bucelas.  The «Quinta do Boição» has a modern winemaking centre with the capacity for liters of wine. It is equipped with a stemmer, tube exchanger to cool the must, two modern pneumatic presses and all vats are in stainless steel with temperature control and equipped with casing fro water circulation.  The storage of the wine is done in stainless steel vats, but there is also an area for the ageing of high quality wines in oak barrels.  Mainly white wines are produced in here and the basis of sparkling wines that give origin to the DOC Bucelas. THE SINGLE ESTATE: QUINTA DO BOIÇÃO

Bucelas Region is near Lisbon, the Atlantic Ocean and the River Tagus estuary. Vines have been grown in Bucelas for centuries, unusually situated on the fluvial plains bordering the Trancão river and Bemposta tributary, but which lend inimitable character to the wines. The Designation of Controlled Origin Bucelas (D.O.C.) is unique in Portugal just for white wines. THE BUCELAS DOC REGION Bucelas Region

The quality of Bucelas wines is well-known for centuries. Mentioned in a Shakespeare novel, was with the French invasions that its reputation grew, when the General Wellington offered them to the King George III, being since then a regular presence at the British court. But after all, what's the secret of Bucelas DOC white wines? Firstly, the grape varietal - Arinto and second the Terroir of the region. Arinto: Is one of the Portuguese oldest indigenous varietals, and although it is planted in other wine regions in Portugal, it is in Bucelas that Arinto reaches its greatest performance due to the soil and climate (terroir) of this region. Arinto, has very good acidity as one of its key features (giving good freshness to the wines) combined with structure and a velvety feel. Its aroma is relatively discreet, with mineral notes, green apples and lemons. Arinto is responsible for wines that evolve very well in bottle, acquiring elegance and complexity. Terroir: Soils are mainly of poor and hard limestone with a climate quite cold during the winter, but warm and dry in the summer and with some humidity during the night (climate of strong maritime influence), thus creating a micro climate favourable to the perfect balance between sugars and acidity and confering it some vivacity, quite characteristic of the white wines of the region. The style of the Bucelas wines have remained almost unchanged since the early twentieth century until the mid- 1980s, respecting the traditional winemaking in the region and a more or less long ageing in large wooden casks, according to the commercial variants. From the late 1980s, however, the Bucelas white wines began to change their style and from the aggressiveness of the acidity and the austerity of the aroma of old white wines, began to be very young,with notes of green apples, pineapples and other tropical fruits, with great freshness, elegance and mouth structure. Caves Velhas is the umbrella brand for Bucellas. It takes the name from a company that was integrated in the Group Enoport United Wines. Caves Velhas was founded in 1939 to market branded wines and since then has built among the consumers an image of tradition, recognition and know how. In 2005 Caves Velhas were integrated in the Group Enoport United Wines Group, ceasing to exist as a company, but maintained as an umbrella brand that due its recognition close to the consumers helps to reinforce the brands that it is linked to.
