Reduce damage to natural environment: Pollution of air, water and land Climate change through combustion emissions/deforestation Loss of biodiversity – flora and fauna Depletion of natural resources + population growth = ‘big squeeze’ Loss of landfill space for waste Nuisance Reduce costs (energy, waste, water, fines/clean-up costs) Ensure legal compliance Enhance reputation and meet stakeholder expectations: customers, investors, lenders, employees, neighbours, regulators, insurers

WYG Environment part of the WYG group creative minds safe hands What is an EMS? Environmental Management System (EMS) Provides your environmental management arrangements with: Structure Consistency Focus Provides a framework to manage and control your key environmental issues (aspects) Provides for review and continual improvement of performance Allows third party certification – recognition or endorsement of your environmental credentials

WYG Environment part of the WYG group creative minds safe hands Key Drivers for EMS Implementation Drivers Image & Reputation Stakeholders e.g. Customers Legal Compliance & Risk Cost Savings & Business Growth

WYG Environment part of the WYG group creative minds safe hands Benefits of an EMS A good EMS should help to: Address your key environmental impact areas: Waste, energy, water, raw materials, transport, emissions/discharges Performance of your products and services Performance of your suppliers - sustainable/green procurement Make cost savings Generate business growth – tenders/PQQS, sales growth in new markets Raise staff awareness of environmental issues Improve your corporate reputation and brand

WYG Environment part of the WYG group creative minds safe hands 3 rd Party Certification - Options ISO international standard: Most popular/widely recognised 3-yearly reassessment with annual surveillance EMAS – European Union scheme: Consistent with ISO Additional requirements e.g. environmental statement BS 8555/Acorn - British Standard: Phased certification – annual reassessments Flexible - stop and start after each phase Ideal for SMEs and supply chain use

WYG Environment part of the WYG group creative minds safe hands Making the EMS Work Commitment from top Good understanding and involvement at all levels Strong training/awareness raising and communications Focus on performance improvement not bureaucracy Integrated with existing systems/culture Robust monitoring Long-term commitment: Certification = start of journey, not the end Customers informed of progress

WYG Environment part of the WYG group creative minds safe hands Key Stages of EMS Implementation Phase 5: Checking, Audit & Review Phase 6: EMS Acknowledgement Phase 2: Compliance with Legal & Other Requirements Phase 4: Implementation & Operation of the EMS Phase 3: Developing Objectives, Targets & Programmes Phase 1: Securing Commitment & Establishing the Baseline BS 8555/Acorn Phases:

WYG Environment part of the WYG group creative minds safe hands EMS Options Average EMS implementation time = 12 months 6 to 18 months typical Options: 1. Go it alone 2. Work in groups e.g. Fenland GBC Option 2 usually saves ca.50% in consultancy/training fees Preferential certification rates can be negotiated for Fenland GBC members Sometimes funded programme opportunities e.g. REE EMS Club
