CAUSE OF THE DISEASE Chlamydia is caused by the bacteria chlamydia trachomatis

STATISTICS Over 2 million people are infected

SPREADING OF DISEASE Chlamydia is spread by oral, vaginal, or anal sex From vaginal birth If you touch your eyes with a contaminated hand you can develop conjunctivitis or pink eye

GREATEST RISK OF CONTRACTING Adolescent girls (15-19 ) Young women (20-24) Young and minority women

SYMPTOMS White, cloudy or watery discharge from the tip of the penis Pain, discomfort or a burning sensation when urinating Inflammation, tenderness and pain in and around the testicles. For men For women symptoms are burning with urination, abnormal vaginal discharge, abdominal or pelvic pain, blood in urine, urinary urgency,

CONSEQUENCES For men pain, fever, and sterility For women it can cause pelvic inflammatory disease or PID which can lead to an ineffective reproductive system, pain or death For children it can lead to lung and eye infections

CURRENT TREATMENTS A single dose of azithromycin or taking doxycycline twice daily for 7 to 14 days are the most common treatments Should be clear in about a week There are no side effects of the pills

EXTRA INFORMATION Some people who get chlamydia and don't get any symptoms the only way to know if they have chlamydia would be to go get tested which is recommended for all those involved in an sexual activity every three to four months
