Who We Are The Nigerian Business Coalition Against AIDS (NiBUCAA) was established by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo (GCFR), former President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Federal Republic of Nigeria at a breakfast meeting at the Executive Chambers, Aso Rock, Presidential Villa on February 15, 2003; The platform was used to call on the Business Community to utilize their core competences and resources to address HIV & AIDS; and in response to this, the NiBUCAA secretariat was commissioned on December 22, 2003.

Our Mission and Vision Mission : To prevent the spread and mitigate the impact of HIV & AIDS in the private sector as well as positioning members to contribute to the national response in their host communities; Vision : A Vision : A private sector that responds to the growing challenges of HIV & AIDS through ensuring equal rights and opportunities for employees infected or affected by HIV; establish, implement HIV & AIDS prevention education, care and support programmes in the workplace and business host communities. Overarching goal: To provide technical assistance to member- and non-member -companies establish, implement HIV & AIDS prevention education, care and support programmes in the workplace and business host communities.

NiBUCAA and its member companies use social marketing to promote products and services that will support the management of HIV & AIDS; carry out actionable activities encouraging demand for HIV Confidential Counseling Testing (HCCT) in the workplace and increased social condom marketing. NiBUCAA: Strategic Objective

..Many companies, many goals, one vision, one brand...NiBUCAA!  Stigma is the perception that an individual has an undesirable attribute, thus reducing his/her status/worth while Discrimination on the other hand is unfair and unjust treatment of an individual based on real or perceived opinion about him/her is  Effects include - 1.Increased HIV transmission prevalence 2.Poor demand for and access to HIV treatment and care services resulting in increased morbidity and mortality 3.Loss of social status 4.Loss of jobs and reduced productivity 5.Increased social friction, crises, etc. 6.Unchallenged violation of rights of PLHIV to care, education, work, association etc. GIPA (MIPA) Initiative: The Focus

The GIPA Initiative The Initiative was adapted by NiBUCAA from the South African Model, expanded and included in the National proposal to the Global Fund Round 5. After its successful inclusion, activities were implemented jointly by:  NiBUCAA,  Federal Ministry of Labour & Productivity (FMoLP), and  Society for Family Health (SFH –Nigeria) an affiliate of PSI

GIPA Workplace Coordinators Candidates for the programme were selected from across the nation based on one critical criteria – living openly with HIV. Selected candidates were trained as peer educators, counsellors and as ambassadors against stigma and discrimination in the workplace Trained candidates were placed in select Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) – as productive employees and the face of positive (HIV) living – now to be known as “MIPA Workplace Coordinators (MWCs)”

The GIPA Initiative: Activities Designed activities aimed at reducing stigma and discrimination of people living with HIV (PLHIV) included: 1. Setting up a workplace-based steering committee 2. Putting in place a comprehensive workplace policy on HIV & AIDS, TB and Malaria as well as other health-related issues 3. Coordinating activities including sensitizations & trainings of colleagues, distribution of SBCC/IEC materials and referrals to HIV service points 4. Above all, being the face of positive living in the workplace

..Many companies, many goals, one vision, one brand...NiBUCAA! The GIPA Success Story! A GIPA Compendium of all trained PLHIV was produced and distributed to partners, member- and non-member companies as a database to enhance their employability; Of the FOUR GIPA Officers in Lagos, THREE had been offered full employment by the SMEs, one has gone back to school (University) and one dropped off to float and run her own NGO! One each was hired by UNAIDS, Abuja and the NiBUCAA Secretariat The component had been expanded under the Global Fund Round 9 Grant to reach out to more SMEs for sensitization and training on developing Workplace HIV Policy; Increased placement of MWCs.
