Learning Objectives: to revise… BUSINESS LOCATION

INTRODUCTION: Where to locate a business may be the most important decision a business makes and can determine its success or failure

Factors Affecting Location: Factors determining location decisions: Availability of labour Government incentives Basic facilities Raw materials requirements Market accessibility Cost of site

The cost of a site in the South East of England will be much higher than a similar site in the North East. The ability to expand and to build new premises may require the support of the local authorities for planning permission. Cost of site:

The availability of workers, their skill level and rate of pay, is crucial in deciding where to locate. Some businesses may need skilled labour whereas others require a large supply of lower-cost, unskilled labour. Availability of labour:

Basic facilities: The key infrastructure considerations are: Road/rail/sea and air links - road is used by over 80% of business. Communications network - for example is there availability of broadband internet access. Access to water and electricity.

Government incentives: Governments often offer financial incentives to start new businesses, or relocate existing ones, in areas that need economic development (“regeneration”). Firms are offered grants or low interest loans if they locate into these regions.
