Measure What Matters…

What is a B Corporation? A for-profit business that has social and/or environmental outcomes as part of its mission Certified by B Lab to meet rigorous standards of social, environmental performance, measurement and transparency An organisation that scores over 80 on the B Impact assessment and supplies supporting documentation. Any UK business is likely to be eligible for B Corp certification as long as the business can demonstrate; It generates the majority of its revenue from trading It competes in a competitive marketplace It is NOT a charity It is NOT a public body or otherwise majority owned by the state

Measure What Matters… What is the certification process? 1 Take the B Impact Assessment Completing the assessment typically takes 1-3 hours We encourage using your best estimates the first time around- you can always flag sections to return to and make changes later When you get to the end of the assessment, your B Impact Report will display your overall score You can then use the Customised Improvement Report to see how you can improve your score 2 Complete an Assessment Review The B Lab team will be in touch to schedule an Assessment Review call with a B Lab staff member The call takes on average minutes On this call, B Lab staff will review questions that may have been difficult to answer or are unclear 3 Submit Supporting Documentation On your Assessment Review, staff will show you how to submit your supporting documentation (this is only required once your score is above 80 out of 200) The documentation will correspond to questions that you answered in the affirmative in your assessment The document list will be generated after your Assessment Review call 4 Complete the Disclosure Questionnaire The Disclosure Questionnaire allows the company to confidentially disclose to B Lab any sensitive practices, fines and sanctions related to the company and its partner NOTE: This component does not affect the company’s rating Acceptance into and continued participation in the B Corp Community is at the sole discretion of the Standards Advisory Council and B Lab’s Board of Directors 5 Confirm your legal path for certification The Standards team will work with you to ensure that you have the stakeholder purposes reflected in your constitution If you have not got these, the standards team will agree a process with you to make the required changes and will provide all information to support this Alternatively, a Term Sheet can be signed, stating that the organisation intends to make the amendments to their constitution within one year of certification 6 Make it Official Sign the B Corp Declaration of Interdependence Join the B Corp Community!

Measure What Matters… Why become a B Corp? Attract investors The B Corp model – where for- profits commit to a societal purpose and publicly share their impact performance – is capturing the imagination of a new generation of entrepreneurs who seek both profit and purpose. Bridges Ventures Impact Report 2014 Attract talent and build trust Goldman Sachs found that millennials, who represent nearly 50% of the global workforce, “have specific needs at work that are dramatically different from previous generations. High among these is the desire to align personal and corporate values” Goldman Sachs, GS Sustain, 21 Protect your company’s mission for the long term By becoming a B Corporation, entrepreneurs can protect their mission by elevating their company’s core social and environmental values to the status of law. Save money B Corps have collectively enjoyed more than $5 million in savings through access to partnership discounts with organisations such as Salesforce. Be part of a community of leaders with shared values “We hadn’t fully grasped what an incredible support system is built into this amazing community of B Corporations.” Edward Perry, COOK Differentiate from competitors 32% of UK consumers will pay more for products and services that are committed to positive social and environmental impact - Nielsen Build collective voice “Our biggest surprise was that there was a world outside of our own individual commitment to being a good company. We feel accompanied and supported, whereas before we felt like soloists on this now orchestrated quest.” Juan Manuel Soto, CEO, Accion Verde Benchmark and improve performance “B Corp certification is a mechanism for companies not only to measure their performance but also to share those measurements with their constituents.” Rick Ridgeway, Vice President of Environmental Initiatives, Patagonia Lead a global movement The number of social businesses deliberately delivering social impact outside the regulated social sector is estimated at 180,000, with 1.5m employees and £120bn turnover.
