Main Idea/Vocabulary Graph points on a coordinate plane. coordinate plane quadrant x-axis y-axis origin ordered pair x-coordinate y-coordinate

NGSSS MA.7.G.4.3 Identify and plot ordered pairs in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane.

Key Concept

Example 1 Naming Points Using Ordered Pairs Write the ordered pair that corresponds to point R. Then state the quadrant in which the point is located. Start at the origin. Move left on the x-axis to find the x-coordinate of point R, which is –2. Move up to find the y-coordinate, which is 4. Answer: So, point R corresponds to the ordered pair (–2, 4). Point R is located in Quadrant II.

Example 1 CYP A.(–4, 1); Quadrant I B.(4, 1); Quadrant I C.(4, 0); Quadrant I D.(4, 1); Quadrant II Write the ordered pair that corresponds to point L. Then state the quadrant in which the point is located.

Example 2 Graph and label point M at (3, 5). Graph an Ordered Pair Start at the origin. The x-coordinate is 3. So, move 3 units to the right. Next, since the y-coordinate is 5, move 5 units up. Draw a dot and label M. Answer:

Example 2 CYP Graph and label point H at (–1, 3). A.C. B.D.

Example 3 AQUARIUMS A map can be divided into a coordinate plane where the x-coordinate represents how far to move right or left and the y-coordinate represents how far to move up or down. What exhibit is located at (–5, –1)?

Example 3 Start at the origin. Move 5 units to the left and then 1 unit down. Answer: Glover’s Reef is located at (–5, –1).

Example 3 CYP A.Sea Cliffs B.Think Tank C.Seaside Pavillion D.Sharks AQUARIUMS What exhibit is located at (–4, 2)?

Example 4 AQUARIUMS In which quadrant or quadrants is the Fur Seals exhibit located? Answer: The Fur Seals exhibit is located in Quadrants I and II.

Example 4 CYP A.Quadrants I and IV B.Quadrants I and II C.Quadrants II and III D.Quadrants III and IV AQUARIUMS In which quadrant or quadrants is the Sea Cliffs located?
