Five Themes of Geography Location  Most geographic study begins with learning the location of places. Location can be absolute or relative. Place  Place describes the human and physical characteristics of a location. Human-environment interaction  This theme considers how humans adapt to and modify the environment. Movement  This theme studies movement and migration of ideas, fads, goods, resources, and communication across the planet. Region  Region divides the world into manageable units for geographic study. Regions have some sort of characteristic that unifies the area.

Major Lines of Latitude and Longitude Equator (0° N/S)  Line of latitude  Separates the earth into Northern and Southern Hemispheres  (“hemi” = half; “sphere” = ball, globe ) Prime Meridian (0° W/E)  Line of longitude  Separates the earth into Western and Eastern hemispheres
