9.3.3 Writing a Research Paper

Do Now: Get out your Chromebooks and open the L1 Research Frame document from your Drive Agenda: ●Do Now ●Research Check-In ●Writing Introductions

Check-In Everyone should have: ● A research topic ● Several research questions ● At least 5 credible sources ● Several claims on your completed Research Frame ● You will need a strong outline and clear/effective claim to direct writing

This week, we will... ● Write all the pieces of our research papers ● Revise: Read each other’s work and offer advice ● Rewrite: Write and rewrite to perfect our papers ● Research: Return to find more research when necessary

What is an Introduction? ● Introduces your paper ● Interesting to get the readers’ attention ● Give context for what will be covered in the paper ● Preview what will follow ● Include the central claim of the research paper

Now... ● Go to Classroom ● Open today’s “Writing an Introduction” file ● Read the Exemplary Introduction quietly to yourself

In groups, answer the following: 1.Is this a good introduction? What did you like/dislike about it? 2.What method did the author of the introduction use to get the readers’ attention? Was it effective? 3.What is the central claim of this research paper?

Do Now: Do Now: Make sure that your file from last class-- L2 Writing an Introduction-- has been moved into your Research Portfolio on Drive Agenda: ●Do Now ●Check-In/Grading ●Work on Intros ●Peer Editing

Peer Editing ● You will be reading 1 other person’s introduction ● You will then provide them with feedback on their introduction ● Everyone will be able to edit/revise their introduction based on peer feedback

While Reading the Intro ● Look for things that are both good and bad ● Use the “suggesting” function to suggest changes/make comments ● Look at both content (does what they’re saying make sense?) and conventions (are they using English correctly?)

Homework 1)Complete the Peer Editing Intros file 2)Revise your Introduction based on the peer feedback you received a)Tomorrow, you will submit your introduction to me

Do Now: Do Now: Turn in: ● L2 Peer Editing Intros ● Writing an Introduction Then, share the “Peer Editing Intros” file with your partner Agenda: ●Do Now ●Grading your Portfolio ●Commas/Colons/ Semicolons ●Body Paragraphs

Grading Your Portfolios ● Your Portfolios will be graded based on two categories: o Completion o Quality ● If you have everything completed, it’s a free 30 points ● Then, you will be graded out of 70 points based on how well everything is done

Subordinate Clause vs. Main Clause ● Main Clause: o Complete sentence, has a subject and predicate  The subject = person or thing doing the action  Predicate = the action they are performing o Main clause: I am going to play. o Incomplete clause: Plays basketball. ● Subordinate Clause: o Starts with conjunction, relies on the main clause, incomplete sentence o Subordinate clause: Whenever it rains. o Subordinate clause: Because it’s fun.

Part 1 Answers 1. No 2.No 3.Yes 4.No 5.Yes 6.Yes

What is a Conjunction? ● A conjunction is a word that connects one part of the sentence to the author o “Hooking up words and clauses and phrases” o Some examples: and, but, yet o I like baseball and basketball o I was hoping it would happen, yet it did not ● FANBOYS o For, and, nor, but, or, yet, so

Using commas with a conjunction ● With a list o Put a comma after each item in the list o Even before the conjunction! o I like pizza, cookies, and chips. ● If the conjunction is followed by a complete/main clause, put a comma before it o I wanted to go, but he left first.  He left first is a complete clause = use a comma o I thought it would be long yet exciting.  Exciting is not a complete clause = no comma

Part 2 Answers 1. No- should not have a comma 2.Yes 3.No- should have a comma after tennis 4.Yes 5.No- should not have a comma 6.Yes

Using semicolons ●;●; ● Semicolons can only be used to separate two complete clauses that are related ● I wanted to go; so I went → INCORRECT ● She was playing basketball; and baseball → INCORRECT ● I wanted to go; she couldn’t stop me → CORRECT! ● Basketball is fun; a lot of people play it → CORRECT! ● The house is big; summer is long → INCORRECT

Part 3 Answers 1.Yes 2.Yes 3.No 4.No 5.Yes 6.No

Using colons ●:●: ● Colons are used to introduce an idea ● A complete clause must come before a colon, but the phrase after the colon does not need to be complete ● So I went: with him and with her → INCORRECT ● I took a lot: money, books, and cars → CORRECT ● She said: “I want to go!” → INCORRECT ● There was one good thing that he wrote: “Cars drive fast” → CORRECT

Part 4 Answers 1.No 2.No 3.Yes 4.Yes 5.No 6.No
