Verbal Theme A phrase that reflects Broad Run and the school year The verbal is developed FIRST You’d Be Surprised Ignite Pandemonium

Visual Theme A graphic that reflects the verbal theme Used from cover to cover! One key element of design is REPETITION - your theme needs to be repeated purposely throughout the book, in obvious and subtle ways

Element #1- Cover Design Includes school name, volume, year

Element #2- Front End sheet Table of contents (sections) that establishes the coverage type

Element #4 - Opening Theme Page Includes intro to theme

Element #5 - Interrupter Spread An interrupter to enhance the storytelling of the book; matches the theme (ex. our spotlights this year)

Element #6 - Sample Spread

Let’s Get Started! Step 1 – Review ALL the inspiration pieces gathered by you and the rest of your group! What do you like? What do you want to make our own? Step 2 – Develop your theme explanation, stemming from your inspiration. The verbal has to be STRONG, detailed, and layered so it can drive the whole theme. Think about how it will apply on openings, dividers, closing, mods, etc.

Step 3 – Once you have your inspiration and your theme explanation written, start to brainstorm and design some visual/verbal connections. How will you communicate the theme to the reader? The visual has to enhance the visual theme - don’t just find pretty things! Step 4 – Are you ready to start designing your required elements? As a group, you will use practice pages to create the following pieces of your theme package: Cover design (front, back, and spine) Front cover endsheet (table of contents) Opening Theme Page(s) Section Divider Sample Content Spread (athletics, academics, or student life)
