MHS VISUAL ARTS NEW COURSES FOR Honors Art History I and II (804 and 808 H 3cr) Advanced Placement Art History(818 AP 6 cr) Two levels of art history have been added into the schedule for the school year. Art History is an exciting set of courses which tie together the evolution of modern society with the development of religious beliefs, technological advancements, and cultural shifts over time. Emphasis is placed on the ability to look at the work and its origins in a critical manner through the use of interactive classroom activities in addition to lectures, video, and reading assignments.

751 Yearbook Publishing Technology CP 6 credits This course is offered to senior students who are interested in representing their graduating class by producing the annual senior yearbook. Students will learn layout, design and copy as well as advertising and marketing skills.. Students will be trained to use various graphics software packages to compose the layouts, ads and photography for publication. Students in this class may also be required to do some photography.. This is an opportunity to employ creative and organizational skills that will benefit the school and class. NOTE: This course is for Seniors only. FULL YEAR course for Prerequisite: Students must obtain instructor approval prior to registration.

719 The Art of Fashion I CP 3 credits This course introduces students to the basics of the fashion world from the reasons why people wear clothes to the evolution of fashion over time. Art projects include fashion illustration, poster presentations related to fashion history, and PowerPoint reviews of red carpet events and pop culture icons. Color theory and the use of color in fashion round out the semester. No prior drawing or art experience required! Prerequisite: none

720 The Art of Fashion II CP 3 credits This course continues and expands upon the concepts introduced in the Art of Fashion I. In addition to illustration and presentation skills related to fashion, hand and machine sewing will be introduced. This course does require some materials be purchased by the student if they choose to sew a clothing item from a commercial pattern. Prerequisite: Successful completion of The Art of Fashion I (suggested 80 or better)

814 Creative Visual Journaling CP 3 credits This course allows the student to self-direct their art experience through the creation of a visual and written journal, (a physical blog), of experience and ideas. The student will be provided with materials and instruction to journal a person theme or series of experiences over the course of the semester. The final product will be a picture book encompassing their personal journey. A variety of art techniques will be explored! PRIOR DRAWING/ART EXPRERIENCE NOT REQUIRED! NOTE: This is an intro level course appropriate for ALL students.

816 Cooperative Art Education CP 3 credits This course prepares students in the regular education program to work in a peer- mentoring capacity with students from our vocational and pre-vocational programs (The Bistro and Copy Center). Students will learn about human development and the effect of disabilities on art production and behavior in a studio classroom. Students will develop art lessons for students at various levels of ability. This class is a joyful and enriching experience for teenagers who love working with peers with disabilities or are considering going into education or human service careers. NOTE: This course is for Juniors and Seniors Prerequisite: Students must obtain instructor or guidance counselor approval prior to registration.

829 Introduction to 3D Art CP 3 credits Introduction to 3D is an entry level studio course focusing on ceramics and other three dimensional sculpture techniques. Students will explore influences from various cultures, including their own, which enhance the creation of assigned projects. Students will explore a wide range of materials including: clay, cardboard, stone, wood, wire, and plaster. Prerequisite: none

832 Ceramics II CP 3 credits This course is a continuation of Ceramics I and builds on the basic techniques learned in that course. Projects will be more complex and wheel- throwing and larger-scale sculptural techniques will be introduced. Students in this class will also assist in loading the kiln, working on gallery displays, and keeping the studio organized. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Ceramics I (suggested 85 or better)

833 Introduction to Visual Art CP 3 credits This course is an introductory level course. Both 2D and 3D art techniques are explored in this comprehensive introduction to the visual arts. The focus is on creating artworks that allow students at all levels to experience success. One group sculpture project is included in the semester's curriculum. PRIOR DRAWING/ART EXPRERIENCE NOT REQUIRED! Studio level students enrolling in this course will be given similar assignments at a higher level of complexity. NOTE: This is an intro level course appropriate for ALL students.

834 Introduction to Drawing and Painting CP 3 credits This course is an introductory level course. Focusing on basic 2D art techniques using drawing and painting supplies students will create multiple works in the style of a select group of 20 th and 21 st century artists. Students will also work in a sketchbook to develop a studio practice and allow their ideas to evolve. PRIOR DRAWING/ART EXPRERIENCE NOT REQUIRED! Studio level students enrolling in this course will be given similar assignments at a higher level of complexity. NOTE: This is an intro level course appropriate for ALL students.

811 Studio Art I CP 3 Credits This course has been designed for those students that have shown exceptional talent and sincere interest in art. This course will include 2D projects including, but not limited to drawing, design, color theory, portraits and study of the figure. The student intending to further his/her education in art will receive guidance in the preparation of the required presentation portfolio. Gallery talks are a requirement and it is advantageous for the student to visit art museums and galleries. PREREQUISITE: Introduction to Visual Art, Intro to Drawing and Painting or signed approval of instructor.

813 Studio Art II H 3 Credits This advanced course is a continuation of Studio Art I and includes drawing,, painting, and mixed media projects. The artworks produced in this class are intended for art submission for portfolio review and/or continued work for the breadth section of the AP Studio Art requirements. Gallery talks are a requirement and it is advantageous for the student to visit art museums and galleries. PREREQUISITE: Satisfactory completion of Studio Art I (suggested 85 or better) or approval of instructor..

815 Studio Art III H 3 Credits This advanced course is a continuation of Studio Art II and includes drawing, art historical presentations. All artwork produced in this class is intended for art submission for portfolio review and/or continued work for the breadth section of the AP Studio Art requirements. Ongoing sketchbook assignments are a requirement and it is advantageous for the student to visit art museums and galleries. PREREQUISITE: Satisfactory completion of Studio Art II (suggested 85 or better) or approval of instructor.

817 Portfolio Production H 3 Credits This course (formerly Studio Art IV) is a course specifically intended for Juniors and Seniors who are applying to college-level art programs. The emphasis will be on completing the requirements of their choice schools’ application portfolios. This course is NOT intended for general art credit. PREREQUISITE: Satisfactory completion of Studio Art II or III (suggested 85 or better) or approval of instructor. This course requires a full year commitment. Students in this course are working specifically on completing the Breadth and Concentration sections of the AP studio Art portfolio. Significant summer work is required. Students intending to apply to art programs should enroll in both AP and Portfolio prep as the AP course does not address all college portfolio requirements. PREREQUISITE: Satisfactory completion of Studio Art III (suggested 85 or better) or approval of instructor. 837 AP Studio Art AP 6 Credits

SCHEDULING NOTES FOR GUIDANCE  Please pay close attention to descriptions and prerequisites. STUDIO CLASSES are for students considering AP Studio Art or post-secondary art programs. These classes are NOT intended for the general population and have a significantly faster pace and higher expectation regarding quality and quantity of work produced.  MANY INTRO-LEVEL COURSES have been created that require minimal or no art experience: Fashion I, Intro to Drawing and Painting, Intro to Visual Art, Creative Visual Journaling, and Ceramics I. (Studio-level students enrolling in these courses will be given projects that have a higher level of complexity) Studio I is not an intro class but intended for students with demonstrated passion or talent and basic skills already in place.  AP STUDIO ART and PORTFOLIO PREP are NOT the same! Many of the AP artworks will work for a college portfolio but most colleges require specific pieces that are NOT a part of the AP portfolio – therefore Art program applicants should take BOTH classes in order to meet the requirements of both.  PORTFOLIO PREP addresses specific college entry requirements and will ensure that students applying to art programs have all the required portfolio elements.  AP STUDIO ART addresses the specific requirements for Breath and Concentration set forth by the College Board
