Species There are 20,000 species of butterflies in the world. About 725 species are in North America North of New Mexico. 575 are in the lower 48 states of the United States. About 275 species occur regularly in Canada roughly 2,000 species are found in Mexico.

Habitat Butterflies drink nectar, tree sap and rotting animal matter. Butterflies are active exclusively during the day and at night sleep on leaves, grass and rocks. The average lifespan of a butterfly is one month.

Kinds The Largest Butterfly: The Female Queen Alexandra Bird wing with a wingspan up to 1 foot.(New Guinea) The smallest Butterfly: Western Pigmy Blue with a half inch wingspan.(Africa) Rarest Butterfly: Palos Verde Blue Most Common Butterfly: Monarch
