Introduction The Cuban Embargo has restricted economic, cultural and diplomatic ties between the United States and Cuba for 53 years. The main objective of our research is to examine the attitudes of Hispanics living in the United States’ towards lifting the Cuban Embargo. These attitudes are important because Hispanics represent one of the largest and fastest-growing minority groups in the United States. As time goes on, politicians will be forced to take sides on this issue. Economically, Cuba offers a helping hand for a number of failing U.S. industries. Some of their top import needs include food and vehicles, offering aid to American farmers and struggling auto manufacturers. Lifting the embargo also opens opportunities for tourism and investment. Regarding the lift on Cuban embargo, people have different opinions depending on their demographic characteristics. According to an individual’s age and income level, we can expect that their viewpoints will differ based on external environmental factors and historical events that they witnessed. Should we expand trade with Cuba? Methodology Data for our research project uses a hybrid data collection approach, using telephone and online surveys, providing a more representative sample and more accurate results. The research project consists of 500 completed surveys from the national Hispanic population. 250 were taken from a random sample using Interactive Voice Response (IVR) data collection and 250 were taken from an online panel. Results and Discussion Based on our results, 81.5% of the population between 18 to 34, 74.3% of between 35 to 54, and 54.1% of those 55 and over are in favor of re-establishing diplomatic relations with Cuba (see graph 2). Thus, there is a statistically significant difference across age groups in favor of re-establishing diplomatic relations with Cuba, where χ² (4, n=500), p<0.01. This is a small but statistically significant association where V=0.19. Based on our results, 62.8% of the population with income level less than $25,000, 61.3% with income level between $25,001 and $75,000, and 86.8% of those with income level higher than $75,000 are in favor of expanding trade with Cuba (see graph 4). Thus, there is a statistically significant difference across income levels in favoring the expansion of trade with Cuba, where χ² (4, n=500), p<0.01. This is a small but statistically significant association where V=0.18. Overall, our results show that Hispanics, particularly the young and wealthy, favor lifting the Cuban embargo, because they feel it will be beneficial for both countries.
