Four different settings of gas fields are included in this unit. For the pupils run off the diagram showing the positions of the fields and give them the costs for pipeline and rig. The working for this unit is based on knowing how to handle large numbers and how to work with Pythagoras. When using Pythagoras you need to inform the pupils that when taking a square root to find the length of pipeline needed, they will need to take the answer to about 8 decimal places to get costs correct to the values stated It's a Gas examples

A gas company has won the licence to develop 6 sites in the North Sea. The location of the gas fields are shown in the diagram on the next slide. The number beside each field is the estimated value in millions of pounds of the gas below. Stewarton is the site of the storage depot to which pipelines are to be laid and the costs involved are Pipeline:- £1,225,000 per mile Rig:- £38,500,000 per site. The gas company only develop one site at a time so a new site is not started until the old site is exhausted. a) What is the cost of developing each site correct to the nearest thousand pounds? b)In what order should the sites be developed in order to get the highest profits first? Its a Gas (Example 1)
