How to use other people’s information to make yourself look smart!!!

What are some great resources for research? *Educational sites—ending in.edu (sites for universities, educationally sponsered sites) * Databases –school circulation program, emedia, Pioneer * Sites that end in.gov or.org (example— Smithsonian)

 *Commercial sites—sites ending in.com—they try to sell things to you.  *Sites that are used for entertainment— youtube, facebook, twitter  *Sites that allow people who are not experts to contribute—pinterest, wikipedia, youtube  Sites that have a url with someone’s name

 Your science teacher corrects your homework, your English teacher corrects your grammar. Who corrects or fact-checks items on the Internet?

What is the Internet? a vast computer network linking smaller computer networks worldwide (usually preceded by the ). The Internet includes commercial, educational, governmental, and other networks, all of which use the same set of communications protocols.networkwhichset

 Good ideas in searching:  Use narrow terms—’shortstop’ instead of ‘baseball’  Take out unnecessary words – ‘Justin Bieber top songs 2012’instead of ‘How many good songs did Justin Beiber sing this year that people liked?’  Narrow your search by adding a subject area at the end of the search– ‘baseball and soccer history’ instead of ‘baseball and soccer’

 Which of the following search strings will give you the best information about the differences between reptiles and amphibians?  A. “reptiles and amphibians”  B. “reptiles vs amphibians”  C. “reptiles, amphibians, differences, science”  D. “What are the differences between reptiles and amphibians?”

 Pioneer Resources—If you use a school computer, you can access this data base for free and without a password!!  Library Circulation Program—We will find places you can research and find many, many resources. You can also tag or bookmark the sites you will use.
