Digital Competence Framework Update – June 2016

Progress to date June 2015 – the Minister for Education and Skills announced that a Digital Competence Framework (DCF) should be ‘fast-tracked’ for availability in September July 2015 – Digital Pioneer Schools announced from across Wales. September 2015 – Work on developing the content and structure starts. May 2016 – Digital and New Deal Pioneers meet to discuss the approach to staff development. June 2016 – Draft framework developed and shared with wider stakeholder group.

Spiralisation – redefining, evaluating and remodelling

Strands Citizenship. Interacting and collaborating. Producing. Data and computational thinking.

Citizenship Identity, image and reputation. Health and well-being. Digital rights, licensing and ownership. Online behaviour and cyberbullying.

Interacting and collaborating Communication. Collaboration. Storing and sharing.

Producing Planning, sourcing and searching. Creating. Evaluating and improving.

Data and computational thinking Problem solving and modelling. Data and information literacy.

Next steps Analysis of survey responses – Digital Pioneers amend the DCF to reflect changes, where appropriate. Exemplar materials are being identified and developed to support the framework statements. Further review by Quality Assurance Group. September 2016 – DCF available to schools and settings. Digital Pioneers work with Pioneer network – to inform further development of the DCF, embed DCF in new curriculum and develop professional learning offer.

Taking the DCF forward From Sept 2016 schools and settings should be: familiarising themselves with the DCF and develop a vision for translating it into practice, before... reviewing skills needs (an audit tool will be made available) reviewing resource needs (to avoid knee-jerk technology purchases) using the New Deal practitioner development offer to develop teachers/practitioners from 2017 beginning to implement the DCF as understanding and confidence grows.

Thanks for your time We look forward to working with you to make the DCF bring stronger digital skills to our young people.
