Guernica
1937 Location: Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid The painting depicts the bombing of Guernica, in Basque Country, by German and Italian warplanes during the Spanish Civil War
The mural (freska), Guenica, is very famous. The mural shows the tragedies (faci ə l ə r) of war. People suffer ( ə ziyy ə t ç ə kin), especially innocent (günahsız) civilians (mülki ə hali). Guernica is often used as an anti-war symbol and a symbol of peace. The mural was displayed (shown) around the world and brought world attention (diqq ə t) to the Spanish Civil War. Guernica
Guernica as a mural The painting is a mural because of its large size. It is 3.5 meters tall and 7.8 meters wide. Guenica is painted in oil on canvas. Picasso used the colors blue, black and white for the painting.
A closer look at the mural A bull (öküz) stands over a grieving (m ə yus etm ə k) woman with a dead child in her arms. A horse falls in pain. A large, gaping ( ə sn ə m ə k ) wound (yara) is in its side. The bull’s tail (quyruq) looks like a flame (alov) with smoke (tüstü) rising from it. The dead soldier has a sword and a flower in his left hand. His right hand has a stigma, which represents martyrdom (derived/comes from Christ). A scared woman floats (iş ə salan) in the window with a flame-lit lamp. A awe-struck (surprised) woman comes in the room and looks at the light bulb. A figure is entrapped (trapped inside-aldadıb aparılan) in fire in the far right corner. The mural appears to be a room with a door and windows suggested by the different colors.
The light bulb The Spanish word for light bulb is “bombilla,” which makes an allusion (eyham) to the word bomb. This refers (istinad etm ə k) to the destructing (da ğ ıtmaq) effect which technology can have on society (c ə miyy ə t).
