Interaction of Living Things

The Web of Life Ecology: interactions of org w/ ea other & their environment Biotic: All the living organisms in that environment Abiotic: Non-living factors that affect the living orgs

5 Levels of Environmental Organization

Ecology 4 Basic Needs of Living Organisms Energy source: determine role in the Food Web producer, consumer, decomposer timing: scavenger, detrivore Food Chain vs. Food Web

Four Basic Needs 1. Water 2. Air* 3. Shelter 4. Food

Water 1.70% of cells 2.Temperature Regulation 3.Catalyst for chemical reactions

Air* Oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide Scavenge electrons! During Metabolism

Habitat/Niche Living things need a place to live which contains all the other necessities of life - water, air, food, and mates.

Food Food provides energy and material to build and repair cells. Depending on how an organism obtains its food, we put it into one of three categories.

Producers Organisms that make their own food.

Consumers Organisms that must eat other organisms in order to acquire energy.

Decomposers Organisms that break down dead organisms or animal waste in order to get their food.

Producer, Consumer, or Decomposer?
