Population Male Sea Lions mostly live in the West Coast in North America, Mexico to Alaska. Female Sea Lions mostly live in Mexico and California. There are also about up to 16 different known species of Eared Seals in the world today. 7 out of the 16 species are Sea Lions.

General Eared Seal Sizes Males can weigh up to about 154-2,500 lbs. Females can weigh up to about lbs. The tallest male species measures at about 20 feet long (6 meters). The tallest female species measures at about 10 feet long. (3 meters).

Dieting Habits The regular dieting habits of sea lions consists of… Squid Herring Mackerel Rockfish Sardines Salmon Eel Octopus

Dangers Boats can permanently hurt Eared Seals. Contamination/Pollutants causes a huge hazard to Eared Seals. Illegal hunting/shooting is a main danger to Eared Seals. Habitat degradation can danger the Eared Seal population. Offshore oil and Gas Exploration is also a danger for Eared Seals

Appearances Eared Seals get their name from their ear flaps on their sides, that cover their ear openings. Another characteristic, is their hind flippers that allow them to move forward and back, which they use to “walk” on land. Both Eared Seal genders have sharp, dog-like canine teeth. Their colors can range from red, to black, to grey, and even brown.

Facts The first known Eared Seal is the Pithanotaria Starri, which lived 11 million years ago. The Eared Seal lifespan averages to about 40 years. They are thought to have evolved from bears. They can stay under water for about 5 minutes, until they need to go back up for oxygen. The Eared Seal’s heart rate goes up to about 112 beats per minute when diving into the water. Their group name is called “colony”.

Marine Mammal Center The Marine Mammal Protection act protects any harassment to Eared Seals, and other marine mammal species. This established fishery jurisdiction, and allowed the mammals to be safer from dangers. The Marine Mammal Center works to increase the Eared Seal population around the world.
