What is social networking? Student narration: “A social network is a social structure made of individuals (or organizations) called "nodes," which are tied (connected) by one or more specific types of interdependency, such as friendship, kinship, financial exchange, dislike, sexual relationships, or relationships of beliefs, knowledge or prestige. The good… Research suggests that, “…the educational and psychosocial benefits of this type of communication far outweigh the potential dangers” (Tynes, p. 575, 2009) Including – Perspective-taking skills necessary for 21 st century citizens – Cognitive skills required in education

The good Clips of positive social interactions Students tell stories – Homework help, advice on classes – Online games – Cross-cultural and interracial interaction – Identity exploration (perspective taking, cognitive skills, reflection) – Social support, intimacy, autonomy Contact with someone outside the family (health issues, relationship issues)

How can we keep safe? Site blocking filters: CyberPatrol, NetNanny, IPrism Locate computer in central location in home Teach safety and self-regulation – Maintain open and honest dialogue – Teach them how to protect online privacy – Develop an exit strategy Join a site, learn to use it, partner with your child
