CCC Ergonomics 2 Outline ●History ●Organization ●Constraints & specifications ●Control room – Dimensions – Acoustics – Lighting – Environment – Ventilation ●Work place – Console – Seat – Distribution ●Other parts of the building – Ground floor – First floor ●Conclusions

D.Manglunki - AB/OP CCC Ergonomics 3 Historique ●In 2003, in the framework of the project “Globe de l’Innovation”, the CERN management decides to integrate the functions of: – MCR – PCR – QCR – TCR

D.Manglunki - AB/OP CCC Ergonomics 4 … into a single Control Centre

D.Manglunki - AB/OP CCC Ergonomics 5 History For financial reasons, the initial project was stopped in autumn In December 2003, the newly appointed DG decides to restart the CCC project, this time in Prévessin, still for financial reasons. The result was an increase pressure to keep the project on time (startup date 01/02/2006), as the SPS control room has to be dismantled, but not before November Experimental Area Meyrin Control Room Cryogenic Control Technical Control Room SPS Control RoomCERN Control Centre

D.Manglunki - AB/OP CCC Ergonomics 6 History Their transfer lines Accelerators Electricity distribution on the site Personnel protection Vacuum Cryogenics Cooling, ventilation, heating What does the CCC have to control?

D.Manglunki - AB/OP CCC Ergonomics 7 Organisation CCC-WG IDOC TS coord. WG CCD & GTD (Consultants)

D.Manglunki - AB/OP CCC Ergonomics 8 Contraints & specifications  13 operators on shift + X specialists  Acoustics  Lighting  Visual and psychological comfort  Temperature  Workspace  Workspace distribution  Existing building, SPS control room  Budget > 600 m 2 All surfaces noise-absorbing Direct/indirect + task lighting Consultants + Operators Conditioned Air Multiple flat screens External view, choice of colors Start November 2004 End 1 st February MCHF

D.Manglunki - AB/OP CCC Ergonomics 9 For reasons of budget and space, the CCC has been built at the same space as the PCR. A 625 m 2 (25m x 25m) extension houses the common control room, whilst the existing building has been modified to house the various services. Surface > 600 m 2 Acoustic screen

D.Manglunki - AB/OP CCC Ergonomics 10 Surface > 600 m 2 Acoustic screen The 5m ceiling height avoids the “parking effect”and is also beneficial for the ventilation system

D.Manglunki - AB/OP CCC Ergonomics 11 Acoustics Minimisation of the ambient noise (<45dB) Ambient noise of the empty room <30dB To obtain a short reverb time (<0.4s), all the surfaces (except windows) have been acoustically treated Carpet tiles Acoustic screens Acoustic ceiling Spacing between windows Acoustic walls

D.Manglunki - AB/OP CCC Ergonomics 12 Acoustics Acoustic ceiling Carpet stuck on false floor tiles Acoustic panels as console back doors Acoustic wall linings

D.Manglunki - AB/OP CCC Ergonomics 13 Lighting The artificial lighting is provided by two components: - ambient lighting Lux, from the ceiling direct-indirect (20-80%) system by Zumtobel; 81 devices, tunable according to “scénarios” - individual task lighting on UPS at the workstation level The natural light coming from the windows is controlled by “Reflex-Roll” blinds

D.Manglunki - AB/OP CCC Ergonomics 14 Environment Harmonious choice of colours: CCD + IDOC’s opinion View on Jura NW orientation: no direct sunlight

D.Manglunki - AB/OP CCC Ergonomics 15 Simulations for choice of colours

D.Manglunki - AB/OP CCC Ergonomics 16 Ventilation system Acoustic screen Temperature: 20ºC to 24ºC In/out via the ceiling Air velocity < 0.15 m/s Relative Humidity: 40% to 70% Noise < 35dB

D.Manglunki - AB/OP CCC Ergonomics 17 Workstation (designed by CCD) 3 flat screens per workspace 3 fixed displays split between 2 workspaces 1 mouse1 keyboard 1 additional admin PC

D.Manglunki - AB/OP CCC Ergonomics 18 Workstation (designed by CCD) Prototype under test in Roy Billinge Room (354/1-011) next to Meyrin Control Room Screens with tunable distance and tilt Acoustic panel used as back door Task lighting Table height 72cm, American Oak look PCs hidden but easily accessible Modular arrangement

D.Manglunki - AB/OP CCC Ergonomics 19 Seats Chosen by IDOC for ergonomics Tested during several weeks in the accelerators control room Being accepted as standard by CERN stores

D.Manglunki - AB/OP CCC Ergonomics 20 Workstation distribution Several options have been studied by the consultants (GTD, CCD), the CCC-WG and the IDOC. A one-day workshop gathered the IDOC and the CCC-WG, moderated by M.Clark (CCD), and chaired by S.Baird, AB/OP group leader, allowed to develop a model satisfactory for all parties.

D.Manglunki - AB/OP CCC Ergonomics 21 Workstation distribution 4 islands (TI, PS complex, SPS+EA, LHC) open towards each other Access to each island without interfering with the other ones Shared central area Minimisation of acoustic interference while allowing visual contact

D.Manglunki - AB/OP CCC Ergonomics 22 Ground floor Acoustic screen WC Rest area and Kitchen Maintenance Lockers & showers (H & F) Reception Glassbox Technical rooms (Telecom & ventilation) Computer room Cleaning Control room

D.Manglunki - AB/OP CCC Ergonomics 23 Conference room with View on control room First floor Acoustic screenOpen plan office for up to 8 visiting scientists WC Safety exit Technical room (ventilation)

D.Manglunki - AB/OP CCC Ergonomics 24 In spite of budget constraints (8 MCHF split into 5MCHF for the building and 3MCHF for the users), time constraints (November 2004 – February 2006) and space constraints (existing building to be modified), the CCC could be designed and built with the comfort of its users as a primary concern Conclusions Acoustic screen A non-negligible part (~2%) of the users’budget was used to hire consultants specialised in ergonomics of control room design (J.Wood & M.Clark, Co-authors of the ISO norm) The control room designers of the CCC are well aware that the success of the LHC operation will largely depend on the CCC Ergonomics The future users have been consulted at all phases of the design process (ORCCCWG then IDOC working groups, visits of tendering companies, Choice of furniture…)

D.Manglunki - AB/OP CCC Ergonomics 25 Thanks for your attention!
