DERMATOLOGICAL MANIFESTATIONS SEEN IN NEONATES COMING TO A NEWBORN OPD: IN A TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL Shubhankar Mishra Sunil K Agarwalla Pravakar Mishra

OBJECTIVES AND DESIGN Skin lesions are much common and specific to neonates. They vary according to age, sex, region. The study about the skin lesions of neonates are less in our region. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of different cutaneous lesions in newborns and evaluates the association between age, sex, maturity, route of delivery, birth weight, maternal disease, and different skin lesion.

MATERIALS AND METHODS All the healthy newborns (early neonates) coming to opd for from january 2015 to april 2015 were included in the study and recorded in a special format. Admitted patients were excluded from study. Statistical assessments were done by using spss software. It was a prospective cohort study done in neonatal opd of M.K.C.G Medical college

RESULTS Total 500 early neonates were included in study. Out of them skin abnormalities were found in 366 (73.2%) patients. Physiological cutaneous lesions were most common, consisting 259 (70.7%) neonates. Out of physiological lesions benign transient lesions were seen in 163(44.6%) and birth mark seen in 138 (37.8%) patients. Out of benign transient lesions pustular dermatoses 95 ( 25.9%) were most common followed by erythema toxicum 48 (13.1%). Pigmentary birth marks 89 (24.5%) were most common among all the birth marks followed by Mongolion spot 71 (19.4%). Pathological lesions seen in 107 (29.3%) cases. Out of which incidence of napkin dermatitis and related disorders were diagnosed in 65 (18.01%) patients. Incidence of cutaneous lesions were high in term children and male sex.

CONCLUSION Benign lesions are most common group of cutaneous manifestations. It is followed by birthmarks. Preventive conditions like napkin rash and contact dermatitis are commonest pathological lesions. Paediatricians, neonatologists and dermatologists should be aware of benign lesions not needing any treatment along with preventable causes of neonatal dermatitis
