Lesson Overview Lesson: drawing Time:75 minutes Volunteers: 3 Medium: pencil Project Overview/Skills – Students will draw a mall collection of objects using simple shapes and shading. Vocabulary – Line – Shape – Balance – Proportion – Dimension Resource Prints (cabinets in the library) #22Cezanne, Paul Apples and Oranges #25Cezanne, PaulFlowers and Pears (for light source) #46Gaugin, PaulFlowers and Fruit (shadows/light source)

Still Life Drawing Materials Needed Collection of misc. objects for still life groupings- recommend setting these up ahead of time, 3 or 4 objects to a grouping – Suggested items: paper clip, rock, small cup, pom pom ball, block, dice, chess piece, shell, pine cone, feather, key. Select objects that are simple in shape and have variety. 3x5 index cards-1 per student- reusuable- set up the grouping on this card – Make sure objects overlap in some way Scratch paper 9x12 White paper- Bristol or watercolor paper Water color pencils Small water cups

Display Once the project is finished, student work should be mounted on colored paper and displayed either in the classroom or in the designated area in the hallway. If there are some who have not finished, please check with the teacher on how they would like to proceed. Do not assume that it ok to continue the project after the allotted time.

Today’s Project Still life drawing – What does still life mean? Draw objects using simple shapes – An orange is a circle

Step 1 - Name Name on the back of your paper

Step 2 – Observe what is in front of you What are the objects made of? – circles – Rectangles – Dark – Light Proportions- How wide is a paper clip compared to a cup? Where do objects overlap?

Step 3 – Practice Drawing Draw the simple shapes of your objects Draw them BIG- fill the page This is practice so try again if it isn’t quite right When you have a practice draft that fills the page, then final paper

Step 4 – Final Pencil & Shading Nice thick paper! Draw your objects using simple shapes. – It is ok to make correction lines Add shading – What direction is the light coming from? – What side of the objects is in the light? What is in shadow? – Shading should be added lightly

Step 5 – Watercolor pencils Use a different color for each object Color the edges of your object – Try it out on the shaded side first Dip finger in water and pull the color across the object You can add more pencil even after it is damp on the page
