Delta Upsilon Recruitment Seminar, Part Two August 19-20, 2015 Delta Upsilon: Building Better Men Since 1834

What Every Brother Should Know Quiz Complete the quiz (10 minutes) – no help/assistance Trade papers with another brother for grading

Delta Upsilon: Building Better Men Since 1834 Active Listening Skills “We were given two ears and one mouth for a reason” Why is it important to listen to our PNMs? What is the challenge with asking “yes/no” questions? If we talk “at” a PNM rather than “with” them, what impression does that provide the PNM? How can we demonstrate we are listening and interested?

Delta Upsilon: Building Better Men Since 1834 Active Listening Skills Activity Listen to four different PNM discussions – What were this PNM’s interests? – What were this PNM’s concerns? – Were there any potential “red flag” items that might concern you? – What elements of the Fraternity might you discuss? – Which brothers might you introduce them to?

Delta Upsilon: Building Better Men Since 1834 Potential “Red Flag” Items: Let Greg Know! Single-Focus: Only talks about parties, women, or “fun” things Legal Issues: Discusses a recent citation/PAULA Academics: Already skipping classes, bad high school grades Time: Over-committed, no time free (doing too much already) Financial: Won’t have the money Personality: Doesn’t interact well with others, rude, opinionated Respect: Damaging or disregarding chapter’s/brother’s property

Delta Upsilon: Building Better Men Since 1834 Introductions and Transitions How do you introduce yourself to a PNM? – Learn/state his name – Share your name – Firm handshake – Repeat his name

Delta Upsilon: Building Better Men Since 1834 Introductions and Transitions (cont.) How do you introduce a brother to a PNM? When is it safe to transition away from a PNM discussion? PICK and ROLL PICK up on something the PNM has shared or is discussing SHARE the info with the new brother (transition) ENSURE the conversation is rolling on its own smoothly ROLL away (excuse yourself and say nice to meet you)

Delta Upsilon: Building Better Men Since 1834 Awareness of Surroundings PNMs are first priority (focus, food, activities, seats, etc) AVOID PNMs sitting alone PNMs wandering through house unescorted One brother with multiple PNMs Too many brothers talking with one PNM (max 3-4) Brothers “bitching” or complaining about anything Brothers sitting in rooms or playing games without PNMs Brothers arriving late/leaving early Brothers on phone/texting Brothers hanging out in their own rooms

Delta Upsilon: Building Better Men Since 1834 “Closing the Deal” Reinforce and acknowledge desired traits/characteristics you see in them (from active listening) Invite them/encourage them to come back to the next event Ask if they plan to come back for the next event – Important to know what, when, and where it is Thank them for coming, encourage them to visit the Web site or Facebook page; contact Greg (or other officers) with any questions or concerns

Delta Upsilon: Building Better Men Since 1834 Role Play Activity Need seven volunteers to play PNMs Remainder of you prepare for a mock recruitment event Get to know as many of the PNMs as possible – After the role play, will vote on which PNMs should receive a bid

Delta Upsilon: Building Better Men Since 1834 Role Play Processing PNMs: What went well? What didn’t go as well? What could they have done differently? Would you have come back based upon this experience? Brothers: What went well? What didn’t go as well? What could you have done differently? What did you think of your selection of PNMs?

Delta Upsilon: Building Better Men Since 1834 Role Play Processing (cont.) PNM #1: Extend a bid? – Concern/focus? PNM #2: Extend a bid? – Concern/focus? PNM #3: Extend a bid? – Concern/focus? PNM #4: Extend a bid? – Concern/focus? PNM #5: Extend a bid? – Concern/focus? PNM #6: Extend a bid? – Concern/focus? PNM #7: Extend a bid? – Concern/focus?
