Warm-up: looking at sources 1. Tell the person next to you your topic 2.PRETEND you are an expert on your partner’s topic. What is this issue? Why is it important to American teenagers? Is it an issue around the world or to other groups? How do we solve this important problem? If you don't know the answer -even better! Make it up – outrageous answers OK.

Was your partner a good source?? An expert on your topic? Maybe! But probably not. Could someone make a nice page on the internet about your topic who knows JUST AS LITTLE as your partner? This week is all about finding sources. Usually you write a bibliography AFTER you finish your paper. This time, we are going to start it BEFORE you finish your project: deciding on whether something is a good source.

Classify the following: Great Source, Pretty good source, Questionable source (but still has something to offer), Not very good source A response on yahoo answers An article by a professor at UCLA who is an expert on your topic A newspaper article A blog written by Ms. Greenberg- “SocialIssuesRocks.com” A student project online A website from a non-profit foundation concerned with this problem

Annotated Bib at a glance 1. Source in MLA format (use my handout you will get next week or Easybib.com) Ex: Castle, Gregory: Modernism in Celtic Revival. New York: Cambridge, Print. Then write a paragraph with three parts 2.Summarize – what type of information is presented in the source? 3.Assess – look at your research questions. How (if at all) will this source be helpful to your research? Will it give you info as to why this is a problem to teens and others and how to solve it?s 4. Evaluate – Is this source reliable? Does it have a point of view? Does it have a perspective?.
