Communion: Bread – The Body of Christ
Presentation transcript:

Why Communion?

“We’ve always done it that way.”

Sermon First

Acts 20:7 “On the first day of the week we came together to break bread.”

We take communion because… Jesus started it.

1 Corinthians 11: “The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me."

1 Corinthians 11:25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

Twelve Stones

Passover Plate

The primary purpose of communion is… A symbolic reminder of Christ’s Death

We need reminders!

The Lord’s Supper is the most meaningful memorial ever established.

Unleavened Bread

Fruit of the Vine

1 Corinthians 11:26 “For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.”

We take communion because… Demonstrates the unity of the Church.

1 Corinthians 11:20 When you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat, for as you eat, each of you goes ahead without waiting for anybody else.

1 Corinthians 11:21-22a One remains hungry, another gets drunk. Don’t you have homes to eat and drink in?

1 Corinthians 11:22b Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you for this? Certainly not!”

1 Corinthians 11:33 “So then, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for each other.”

1 Corinthians 11:27 Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.

1 Corinthians 11:28 A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup.

1 Corinthians 11:29 For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself.

Two things to consider… Remember the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross

Two things to consider… Remember your fellow church members

Matthew 5:23 Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you,..

Matthew 5:24 …leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.”

Consider… Are you a Christian?

Consider… Someone you need to forgive?

Consider… Distracted or Irritated?

Communion is a time… I rededicate myself to Christ.

1 Corinthians 11:23-25 "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.“ "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
