Time Management and Setting Priorities University of Kufa College of Medicine Medical Education Unit Adapted from Academic Success In Emory Medical School 2012

Time Management Time management is an essential tool and it is the key to excellence and survival in medical school. Why is it very important? 1.Time management produces enough time to study and perform other tasks. 2.It helps reduce study-related stress.

How to manage your time? - Create schedules and calendars for - Make use of the weekends, holidays and breaks between semesters.

What to list on these calendars? 1.Study activities: Prime Study Time. 2.Daily and weekly life commitments and duties: 3.Family and social activities.

Prime Study Time -The most important part of your schedule; effective study. -A minimum of -Average weekly hours : -You have 1.Review the day’s lectures outline and notes. 2.Review notes and outlines for next day’s classes. 3.Make summaries and study cards and charts from the notes you’ve reviewed. 4.Review the above material again.

Why are these tasks important? 1.Focus on what you learned today, and prepare you to listen for upcoming classes. 2.Identify important information and possible test questions from today’s lectures.   Analysis and reflection upon your exam performance  know what to listen for.

Prime Study Time -In order to implement Prime Study Time strategy, you need to define two core elements: WHEN: is the location of your Prime Study Time within the daily and weekly calendar. Select the best timing when you have the highest energy. HOW: you need to find out your unique learning style to employ it during your Prime Study Time.

Prime Study Time -Find a regular study place with minimum distractions. -Have regular study and leisure times. -Do not stop in the middle of a topic. You should take small breaks (e.g. coffee ) at logical times, i.e. at the end of a topic. -Time wasting activities such as TV and social media are avoided.

Prime Study Time -Do not create “ jet lag “ in yourself: Good reading schedule  destroy it by staying up all night on weekends. - Your time management plan : built-in flexibility  stress reduction. - Try to salvage ten minutes each hour of your day   

Setting Priorities As a medical student, you must determine your short and long term priorities. You must effectively complete your tasks according to their priority level. Setting goals and determining priorities is the best way to make sense of your study time. Make a list of your study tasks according to importance.

Setting Priorities You need to know your priorities because: - A lot of work - Not enough time - Required to achieve the best results possible - A highly challenging and competitive environment.

In Summary Organise your time to accommodate study activities. List all of your academic, family and social priorities on monthly, weekly and daily calendars. Your prime study time should be spent in a dedicated environment. Aim to ≥20 hours/week study with flexibility. Identify : best timing and learning style. Studying and reading ahead: prepare you for next classes and improve your comprehension. Identify possible test topics. List your activities and tasks according to priority.

TASK Write down a complete plan for the upcoming semester and include monthly, weekly and daily priorities. You need a 2016 calendar and your semester timetable. In this plan, include all the major due dates, examination dates, classes and lectures, holidays, birthdays and family events. Make sure to list all the events that will occupy your own schedule and calculate the available time that can be used as Prime Study Time.

Finally Answering these questions might help clarify your long term priorities 1.What are you really here for? 2.What are you about? 3.What’s your purpose? 4.What knowledge is of most worth to you? 5.What do you really want to learn in your medical education and practice? 6.What do you want to accomplish in your life? 7.What are you going to do with your chance in serving humanity through medicine? 8.How do you propose to use it? 9.What goals are essential for you to reach? 10.What goals are less important?

GOOD LUCK
