Ecosystem Components Producers – Basis of an ecosystem’s energy – Autotrophs: perform photosynthesis to make sugars – Chemotrophs: Bacteria which use.
Stations activity – food chain, food webs, and energy pyramid Instructions Word Sort; Print the word sort and cut apart for students to match the definition.
Energy in Ecology How is energy transferred?. Energy  All ecosystems must transfer energy.  Energy flows in ONE DIRECTION  Heat Energy (Sun)  changes.

Title your page: Flow of Energy Notes

a sequence of organisms that eat one another in an ecosystem food chain a sequence of organisms that eat one another in an ecosystem Highlight these 2 words Draw this food chain.

READ ONLY

You DO need to write all the information on the slide You do NOT need to draw this food chain. Only observe where the yellow outline is on each slide. You DO need to write all the information on the slide To make Producers: MAKE their own energy (glucose) using photosynthesis- obtains its energy from the sun AKA: autotroph self energy (Obtains energy from itself)

(Obtains energy from different things than itself) To eat Consumers: “eaters” get their energy from consuming (eating) other organisms. AKA: heterotroph Three types of consumers: Herbivore: plant-eater Carnivore: meat-eater Omnivore: plant- and meat-eater different energy (Obtains energy from different things than itself) all

To eat First (1st) Primary Consumers: first “eater” in the food chain- obtains its energy from the producer These would be Herbivores = plant-eaters

To eat Second (2nd) Secondary Consumers: second “eater” in the food chain- obtains its energy from the primary consumer These would be carnivores = meat-eaters

To eat Third (3rd) Tertiary Consumers: third “eater” in the food chain- obtains its energy from the secondary consumer These would also be carnivores = meat-eaters

DRAW this food chain then use the word bank to LABEL each part. Decomposer Producer Secondary consumer Tertiary Consumer Primary consumer

Animal Interactions This box is READ ONLY: Predators are the consumers that capture and eat other consumers Prey is the organism that is captured by the predator The hawk is the predator and the snake is it’s prey The snake is the predator and the frog is it’s prey The frog is the predator and the grasshopper is it’s prey

Food web ALL the feeding relationships in an ecosystem Most organisms do not eat the same thing every day, so they are part of more than one food chain. Consists of many overlapping food chains in an ecosystem. Highlight these 2 words Draw this food web. (or write the names of the organisms)

READ ONLY

READ ONLY In this food web, can an organism be BOTH a primary AND a secondary consumer?

READ ONLY Looking at the food chain with the red arrow, the mouse is the primary consumer. However, looking at the food chain with the orange arrows, the mouse is the secondary consumer. So, depending on which food chain you are looking at, the label of which consumer it is (primary, secondary, or tertiary) can change.

In both a food chain and a food web, the arrows show the flow of energy NOT who eats who! Draw this food chain The sun GIVES ENERGY to the grass. The grass GIVES ENERGY TO the mouse. The mouse GIVES energy to the hawk.

READ ONLY

Using this food web, list (in your notes) three separate food chains Using this food web, list (in your notes) three separate food chains. You need list every organism in the food chain (until the arrows stop). Example: sunflower  beetle  ladybug  bird  owl

Predict: If the amount of frogs decreased… Answer the following in complete sentences that restate the question. Predict: If the amount of frogs decreased… What would happen to the amount of snakes? What would happen to the amount of caterpillars?

energy pyramid Shows the amount of energy that moves from one feeding level to another in a food web Highlight these 2 words hawk Facts: The greatest amount (100%) of energy is available at the producer level The least amount of energy available to going to be at the top of the energy pyramid. rat grasshopper grass

10% Rule: Amount of energy at each level When an organism eats, it obtains energy. It then uses most of energy for itself in forms of mechanical energy (energy of motion) in life processes like growth and movement. At each trophic (energy) level, 90% of the energy is USED as mechanical energy and some of which is lost as heat (when bonds are broken heat is released), and only 10% of the energy is PASSED to the next level. 0.01% 0.1% Draw and label this energy pyramid exactly as shown. Consumers 1% 10% Producers 100%

Assignment ON LEVEL: PRE-AP: Create a double bubble comparing and contrasting food chains and food webs. PRE-AP: Create a triple bubble comparing and contrasting food chains, food webs, and energy pyramids. Example shown on the next slide. It must include AT LEAST 3 similarities total and 4 differences each side

This is a sample of what your triple bubble might look like. Pre-AP Only: This is a sample of what your triple bubble might look like.
