Local Color Local color is what we all see everyday. An orange is orange, a banana is yellow. Pretty simple, right? Local color is the color that something appears from nearby when viewed under average lighting conditions. We think of the local color of a banana as yellow. Local color is what we see and what are brain would tell us we see. For example if you thought about a banana in your mind’s eye, what color is it?

Reflected Color However, In real life, many colors can be perceived across the surface of a banana: yellow, green, brown, etc., depending upon the context in which it is viewed. Depending on lighting conditions, how shadows fall and look on the object, the color may seem to shift slightly away from its "local" color. The light/color from surrounding objects may also be reflected upon the object. These actually perceived colors are called reflected colors.

Conclusion: Local color is the base color of an object. Reflected color is the object seen under the influence of light, shadow, and atmospheric effects. Light exists upon all objects and bounces around continuously creating subtle color changes in the surface of an object

The more reflected color you perceive in an object, the more color variation you will need to depict it
