The Spanish  Conquistadors are soldiers under the command of the Spanish King.  Their quest is to conquer land in the name of Spain and add wealth and glory to the Spanish Kingdom.  The Three goals of Spanish exploration are Gold, Glory, and God.

The Meaning of the Three G’s  Gold= Find wealth  Glory= conquer new land for SPAIN.  God= convert all natives to Christianity, Catholic Christians

Cortez  Cortez was a military man.  He assembled an invasion force  He left Cuba with his men to discover the main land source of gold that had been found in Cuba  He discovers the Aztecs upon arrival in what is now Mexico

The Fateful Meeting Who drew this picture?

Death and Destruction  Cortez did not wish to become friends  He had come to conquer  He made his way to Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital.  There he kidnapped the king Montezuma.  He used his few men to hold off 5,ooo aztec warriors in an epic battle.  The Aztec were conquered

What happened next?  Cortez sets up a colony with himself as governor.  He starts shipping Aztec gold and silver back to Spain  He destroys the Aztec temples and replaces them with Catholic churches.  The Europeans learn about chocolate!

Conquest of the Inca

Pizarro

Magellan

The World Is Round!  By the time Magellan took a fleet of ships on a trip around the world, most people accepted that the world was round and that Columbus was wrong. Columbus never found Asia.  Although Magellan did not survive his journey, his voyage proved that the world’s oceans are connected, the world was round, and that Columbus was wrong.

The other Spaniards  Other Spanish explorers set off to explore the North American continent  De Soto, Coronado, and Ponce de Leon, explored what today is the southern United States.  Francisco Balboa discovered the Panama Isthmus and the Pacific Ocean

What about the English?  Henry Hudson looks for a North West Passage. That is a northern route around the Americas to Asia. He never found it. He did find the Hudson bay.  John Cabot explores the East Coast of North America

Other English  Sir Francis Drake is hired by Queen Elizabeth to circumnavigate the globe like Magellan.

So What?  What were the results of Exploration?  1. Technology spread through Cultural Diffusion.  2. The Slave Trade begins across the Atlantic  3. European nations like Spain and England become Empires and native civilizations die  4. The world is proven to be much larger than previously thought
