8 th grade Physical Science Unit 1 Lesson 1-3 Overview

Class Connect Structure  All Science class connect sessions will be at 3PM EST (2PM CST)  Weekly Overview Lesson on Monday or Tuesday  Targeted small group sessions for the remainder of the week  If you do not pass your assessment for a lesson you will be required to attend a small group session.

Science Journal  Each student needs to have a Science Journal  I recommend having a hard copy instead of a virtual journal. You will need to able to take you journals away from your computer to make observations  All entries must be dated  All entries should also have a topic line  Any type of note book will work, but you need about 100 pages.

Unit 1 Overview In this Physical Science course, you will study the following topics in this order: 1. Introduction to Physical Science 2. Matter 3. Chemistry 4. Force and Motion 5. Energy 6. Waves, Sound, and Light 7. Electricity and Magnetism 8. Research Project

What is Physical Science?  Watch the following video and the chat examples of Physical Science  ZMN7k ZMN7k

Lesson 2 Science Systems  There are two types of systems  Open  Closed

Open vs. Closed Systems  What is the difference between an open and closed system?  Is the Earth an open or closed system?  Example of an open system?  Type examples of in chat  What about a fish tank?  Example of a closed system?  Type examples in chat

Universal Laws vs Theories  Universal Laws are the same everywhere in the Universe  Example of Gravity  Theory or Theories change over time as new information is learned  Example of Atomic structure

Lesson 3 and 4 Measurement and International System (Metric System)  Measuring different things requires different tools  Volume - liters  Mass - grams  Length - meters  Temperature - Celsius or kelvin

SI - International System of Units 1. Based on multiples of Common metric prefixes : a. mega- (M) x b. kilo- (k)1 000 x c. hecto- (h) 100 x d. deka- (da) 10 x e. deci- (d)0.1 x(1/10) f. centi- (c) 0.01 x (1/100) g. milli- (m) x (1/1000) h. micro- (u) x

Targeted Sessions this week  If you would like to attended a small group session, please sent me a kmail and identify the unit and lesson  All sessions will be recorded and links will be posted on my website  jackshoaf.weebly.com

Thanks for coming  If you do not have any questions you are free to go.  Questions
