On the Bleeding Edge: Hot Topics in Green Development Presentation for the National Brownfields Conference May 5, 2008 Sustainable Stormwater Management Outline: Overview Establishing goals Perspectives Case study eDesign Dynamics 338 west 39 th Street, 10 th Flr New York, NY Ph

Sustainable Stormwater Management Old Paradigm Human Needs Loss of Ecosystem Services: Water Infrastructure Altered hydrologic cycle Altered ecological & biological cycles Ecohydrologic system Engineers and Planners

Sustainable Stormwater Management New Paradigm Human Needs Environmental Needs Ecohydrologic system Sustained Ecohydrology Sustainable Water Infrastructure Engineers and Planners

Sustainable Stormwater Management Establishing goals in concert with off-site/onsite considerations: 1) Good: The educational/pilot project (onsite) 2) Better: Multi-tiered integration on a particular site (onsite) 3) Better yet: Zero runoff/zero wet weather flow (onsite) 4) Better still: Zero runoff and landscape as treatment base for adjacent sewersheds (off-site/onsite)

Sustainable Stormwater Management Potential perspectives of a Parks landscape site: 1) Landscape as an ecosystem (The Ecologist): The opportunity to (re)create ecosystems: stormwater from waste to resource 2) Landscape as watershed or sub-watershed (The Engineer): Landscape as an engineering resource 3) Landscape as a developed site (The Planner / LA / Architect): Landscape for programming purposes

Sustainable Stormwater Management Case Study: Rye Golf Course Rye, NY

Sustainable Stormwater Management Projects: Rye, NY Goal 4: Zero runoff and landscape as treatment base for adjacent sewersheds (off-site/onsite): 1)External/internal stormwater 2)Reduce TSS to L.I.S. 3)Reduce potable water budget 4)Water re-use 5)Habitat creation Maps.google.com

Sustainable Stormwater Management Projects: Rye, NY Ecosystem perspective: 1) Creating freshwater wetland habitat A) Onsite wetland value B) Compliments regional ecosystem C) Dynamic hydrology / floodplain / zonation Maps.google.com

Sustainable Stormwater Management Projects: Rye, NY Engineering perspective 1) Development of water budget A) Irrigation demand B) Water source: integration of stormwater model based on land cover types, soils/surrounding sewershed and groundwater 2) Floodplain = Extended detention Maps.google.com

Sustainable Stormwater Management Projects: Rye, NY Engineering perspective

Sustainable Stormwater Management Landscape as developed site (beneficial linkages from highly programmed areas): 1) French drain for base flow to provide additional irrigation water 2) Increase of turnover rate of waterbody, improving DO and decreasing risk of eutrophication Maps.google.com

Sustainable Stormwater Management Case Study: Water Resources in Buildings Hoboken, NJ Sustainable Stormwater Management … and Sanitary!

Sustainable Stormwater Management Case Study: Water Resources in Buildings Hoboken, NJ Building Discharge = Stormwater + Greywater + Blackwater Building Water Demand = Potable plus… toilet flushing, irrigation, cooling, laundry, and even showers. Perspective shift: waste product becomes resource. Sustainable Stormwater Management … and Sanitary!

Opportunities for conservation: Review of relative usage: Sustainable Stormwater Management … and Sanitary! Conservation First Conservation yields a 49% - 53% reduction of total combined sewer loading

Sustainable Stormwater Management … and Sanitary! Then Stormwater and Greywater Re-use NJDEP design Parameters for new Construction Average Daily Discharge(ft3) Percent contribution Average Daily Discharge(ft3) Percent contribution Average Daily Discharge(ft3) Percent contribution Strormwater3112%314%314% Greywater15256%45761%50857% Blackwater8833%26535%34839% Total discharge 272 ft3753 ft3888 ft3 100% NJDEP design Parameters for new Construction Average Daily Discharge(ft3) Percent contribution Average Daily Discharge(ft3) Percent contribution Average Daily Discharge(ft3) Percent contribution Strormwater3115%315%314% Greywater12751%37756%38853% Blackwater8836%26539%315 43% Total discharge247 ft3674 ft3734 ft3 10 unit building 32 unit building w/ 6800 sq Museum space Standard Usage With Re-use Greywater recycling yields a benefit of a 10%-13% reduction of total combined sewer loading (including stormwater)

Sustainable Stormwater Management … and Sanitary! Then Stormwater and Greywater Re-use Summary: If greywater recycling, maximum conservation measures, and rainwater harvesting are all employed, the design yields a reduction of total sewer loading from 888 to 300 cf/day, or an approximate 66% reduction of total combined sewer loading from the site. … no shocker there, greywater is approximately 65% of the “waste” stream– you just need to find a place to put it. Base flow for natural systems outside the building, anyone?
