Apostle’s Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell, The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; The Holy Catholic Church; The communion of saints; The forgiveness of sins; The resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen 10

Today’s Prayer Prayer by Woong Ryul Sohn 14
This Week’s Verse And he is then also the father of the circumcised who not only are circumcised but who also follow in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised. It was not through the law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith. (Romans 4:12,13)(Jan. 24 th ) 15
Next Week’s Verse For if those who depend on the law are heirs, faith means nothing and the promise is worthless, because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression. Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring—not only to those who are of the law but also to those who have the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. (Romans 4:14-16)(Jan. 31 th ) 16
Today’s Reading Romans 4:9~17 9.Is this blessedness only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? We have been saying that Abraham’s faith was credited to him as righteousness. 10.Under what circumstances was it credited? Was it after he was circumcised, or before? It was not after, but before! 11.And he received circumcision as a sign, a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. So then, he is the father of all who believe but have not been circumcised, in order that righteousness might be credited to them. 12.And he is then also the father of the circumcised who not only are circumcised but who also follow in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised. 17
Today’s Reading Romans 4:9~ It was not through the law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith. 13. 아브라함이나 그 후손에게 세상의 상속자가 되리라고 하신 언 약은 율법으로 말미암은 것이 아니요 오직 믿음의 의로 말미암 은 것이니라 14. For if those who depend on the law are heirs, faith means nothing and the promise is worthless, 14. 만일 율법에 속한 자들이 상속자이면 믿음은 헛것이 되고 약속 은 파기되었느니라 15. because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression. 15. 율법은 진노를 이루게 하나니 율법이 없는 곳에는 범법도 없느 니라 18
Today’s Reading Romans 4:9~ Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring—not only to those who are of the law but also to those who have the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. 17. As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.” He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed—the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not. 19
Chap. 18 Abraham – Justified by Grace (Romans 4:9-17), Part 4 20
Introduction 21 In Romans 4:9–17 Paul demonstrates three closely related truths: (1) Abraham’s justifying faith did not come by his circumcision (vv. 9–12); (2) it did not come by his keeping the law (vv. 13–15); (3) but rather it came solely by God’s grace (vv. 16–17).
Abraham was not justified by the Law (vv.13-15) 22 Paul’s second point in this passage is that Abraham not only was not justified by the rite of circumcision but also was justified by keeping the Mosaic law. Again the chronology of the Jewish Scriptures proves his point. As every Jew well knew, the law was not revealed to Moses until more than five hundred years after Abraham lived, and that patriarch obviously had no way of knowing what the law required.
Abraham was not justified by the Law (vv.13-15) 23 When Abraham was declared right with God, he was neither circumcised nor in possession of the Mosaic law. Therefore, the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith.
Abraham was not justified by the Law (vv.13-15) 24 The promise to Abraham (Gen. 12:3; 15:5; 18:18; 22:18). (Gen. 12:3) I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” (Gen. 15:5) He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” (Gen. 18:18) Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him. (Gen. 22:18) and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.”
Abraham was not justified by the Law (vv.13-15) 25 In analyzing God’s promise to Abraham, four significant factors emerge. First, the promise involved a land (see Gen. 15:18–21) in which Abraham would live but that would not be possessed until some five centuries later, when Joshua led the Israelites in their conquest of Canaan. (Gen. 15:18-21) On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram and said, “To your descendants I give this land, from the Wadi of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates— the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites, Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites.”
Abraham was not justified by the Law (vv.13-15) 26 Second, the promise also involved a people, who would be so numerous that they could not be numbered, like the dust of the earth and the stars in the sky (Gen. 13:16; 15:5). Eventually, Abraham would become the “father of many nations” (Gen. 17:5; cf. Rom. 4:17). (Gen. 17:5) No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations. Abram means exalted father Abraham probably means father of many
Abraham was not justified by the Law (vv.13-15) 27 Third, the promise involved a blessing of the entire world through Abraham’s descendant (Gen. 12:3). Fourth, the promise would be fulfilled in the giving of a Redeemer, who would be a descendant of Abraham through whom the whole world would be blessed by the provision of salvation. That promise to Abraham was, in essence, a preaching to him of the gospel (Gal. 3:8). (Gal. 3:8) Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.” 또 하나님이 이방을 믿음으로 말미암아 의로 정하실 것을 성경이 미리 알고 먼저 아브라함에게 복음을 전하되 모든 이방인이 너로 말미암아 복을 받으리라 하였느니라
Abraham was not justified by the Law (vv.13-15) 28 Abraham believed that gospel, and even when Isaac, the sole divinely-promised heir, was about to be offered as a sacrifice, Abraham trusted that somehow God would “provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering” (Gen. 22:8). (Gen. 22:8) Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.
Abraham was not justified by the Law (vv.13-15) 29 Through the writer of Hebrews, the Lord gives a beautiful revelation of the extent of Abraham’s understanding and faith. (Heb. 11:17-19) By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.” Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death. ( 비유컨대 그를 죽은 자 가운데서 도로 받은 것이니라 )
Abraham was not justified by the Law (vv.13-15) 30 Jesus told the unbelieving Jewish religious leaders, (John 8:56) “Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.” In a way that is not explained, Abraham foresaw the coming of the Messiah, who would be born as one of his promised descendants. It was through that descended Messiah, the Christ, that Abraham would bless the entire world and be heir of the world.
Abraham was not justified by the Law (vv.13-15) 31 (Gen. 22:17,18) I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.” (Gal. 3:16). The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. Scripture does not say “and to seeds,” meaning many people, but “and to your seed,” meaning one person, who is Christ.
Abraham was not justified by the Law (vv.13-15) 32 Later in that same chapter the apostle says of all believers, Gentile as well as Jew, “If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise” (Gal. 3:29). In Him they become part of that single spiritual seed, “whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit” (1 Cor. 6:17).
Abraham was not justified by the Law (vv.13-15) 33 Because they are identified with God’s only begotten Son, believers become themselves children of God. (Rom. 8:16–17) The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
Abraham was not justified by the Law (vv.13-15) 34 It is not human descent from Abraham but spiritual descent from him, by following his example of faith, that makes a believer an heir both with Abraham and with Christ. As Paul reminded the Corinthian believers, most of whom doubtless were Gentiles, human descent means nothing as far as a person’s standing before God is concerned. (1 Cor. 3:21–23). So then, no more boasting about human leaders! All things are yours, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future—all are yours, and you are of Christ, and Christ is of God.
Abraham was not justified by the Law (vv.13-15) 35 On the other hand, Jesus told the unbelieving Jewish leaders that, although they physically descended from Abraham, spiritually they were sons of their “father the devil” (John 8:44). (John 8:44) You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires… Justification has never been through the Law, just as it has never been through circumcision.
Abraham was not justified by the Law (vv.13-15) 36 He was also speaking of the general principle of human lawkeeping, in which many Jews trusted for their salvation. As Paul clarifies later in the epistle, God’s law “is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good” (Rom. 7:12; cf. Gal. 3:21). But the law was never given as a means of salvation, even for Jews. “For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.” (Gal. 3:10).
Abraham was not justified by the Law (vv.13-15) 37 The purpose of the Law was to reveal God’s perfect standards of righteousness and to show men that they are unable in their own power to live up to those standards. Awareness of that inability should drive men to God in faith. The law was given as a “guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith” (Gal. 3:24). 이같이 율법이 우리를 그리스도께로 인도하는 초등교사가 되어 우리로 하여금 믿음으로 말미암아 의롭다 함을 얻게 하려 함이라
This Week’s Conversation A: What is the meaning of circumcision? B: What do you want to know? A: What is God’s intent in circumcision? B: Moses had declared it clearly in Deuteronomy. A: What is it? B: The Lord your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants, so that you may love him with all your heart and with all your soul, and live. (Deut. 30:6) A: Wow! Now I see the meaning of circumcision. B: God always wants first of all to cut away the sin that covers the heart! 38
Next Week’s Conversation A: Are you an Abraham’s descendent? B: No! I’m not Jew. A: Do you believe in Christ? B: Of course! A: Then you are Abraham’s offspring. Scripture says “If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.” (Gal. 3:29) B: Now I see. It signifies spiritual descent. A: Exactly! 39
