Color: Color is one of the most exciting elements of art! There must be light for us to see colors. Primary colors Secondary colors Intermediate colors/Tertiary colors Complementary colors

There are three properties of color. They are: -Intensity -Value -Hue

Intensity: refers to the brightness of a color. If we want to dull a color, we mix in a little of its complementary color. Value: refers to the darkness or lightness of a color. If a bit of black is added to blue, the color becomes darker and is called a SHADE. The more black that is added, the darker the value gets. If white is added to a color, it becomes lighter and is called a TINT.

Hue is simply the name for a color. Where have you seen something like this before? Maybe a paint store!

Dining Room in the Country Artist: Pierre Bonnard Date: 1913 Medium: Oil on canvas What can you tell me about the color intensity in this painting? How did the artist create balance? The artist used NEIGHBORING colors which are called analogous colors.

Paul Gauguin Tahitian Landscape, 1891 What can you tell me about the intensity of these colors? What does this artist do to lead us into his picture? What color category did he use to paint this landscape?

Pierre Auguste Renoir The Piazza San Marco, Venice, 1881 What category of colors are being used here? How is the intensity different in this painting vs the previous ones?

Franz Marc Die grossen blauen Pferde (The Large Blue Horses), 1911 How did the artist create the illusion of 3-D forms on a flat surface? How did the artist create contrast in this painting?

Analogous colors. What are they? What combination did Gauguin use in this painting? Warm colors. What are the three warm colors? Feelings from the color?

Paul Gauguin Cool colors. What are the cool colors? What is the feeling you get from this painting with dominant cool colors?

NEUTRAL colors…..Basically colors that are not on the color wheel.

Examples

Our color assignment: We will be using a multiple circles to create a design to represent our color categories. One large circle divided into 12 areas will be the color wheel. You will have 8 other concentric circle designs in your background. Those 8 areas will represent: 1-Analogous colors 2- tints 2-shades 2-opposites/complementary 1-neutral colors

Sonia Delaunay Russian born artist Concentric circles, semicircles and arcs that give the illusion on overlapping

Abstract art Does not depict a person, place or thing. The subject is based on what you see; color, shapes, size, brushstrokes, etc…..

Color wheel design Assignment You are going to learn how to mix tints and shades of a pure color, creating different hues of that color. This project will be done with tempera paints. We will be creating this color wheel design and learning the properties of colors which then leads us into a final painting that must demonstrate blending of colors, highlights/shadows and transitions. This painting will be with acrylic paints on a canvas.

Steps to the color wheel We will be dividing our circle into twelve 30 degree sections. We then will be dividing the circle into 3 parts, circle inside of circle. Each pie slice will have 3 areas, one for pure color, one for it’s tint and the other for it’s shade. You can decide how you are going to organize the order of them. We will then be putting a design on top that will repeat in each section. This is to add interest to our color wheels.

Example of the color wheel

Another color wheel example

How is the color wheel designed? Can you see the pie shaped areas of pure color, tints and shades? Can you see the cool intricate design put on top to enhance the image? The design is trace on to each section and painted.

Other color categories you need to know! Primary colors Secondary colors Intermediate colors/Tertiary colors Neutral colors Complementary colors Monochromatic color scheme
