OCTOBER 2011 The children from the village are searching through woods and orchards for branches and dry leaves but also for tree trunks, which they will use to build a big pile. The fire is light up at night fall. When the fire gets big enough, the children begin screaming: “All of you come to Sumedru’s fire!” This incantation is an invitation for villagers and tourists to take part in this traditional event. Sumedru’s fire is a unique traditional custom in the Romanian culture, with a powerful funeral character. It takes place each year on the night of 25th to 26th of October. Accordingly to the Romanian tradition, Sumedru represents a mythological figure, the master of winter. Sumedru’s fire symbolizes the script of death and the annual rebirth of nature divinities. WORKING AS VOLUNTEERS IN SOCIAL CANTEEN MIOVENI The director of the Consortium for Local Development to whom belongs this canteen congratulated us for our humanitary activity.

Georgiana: I’m grating the carrots and the parsnips. Oana: And I’m cutting some onions for the soup.

Carmen: Let’s broke the eggs! Alexandra: They are fresh.

It’s funny to wash the dishes. And to arrange them, too.

We hope the poor people who eat here will like the menu.

MARCH 2011 LITTLE MARCH Every year Romanian people knit two little tassels: a white one and a red one. At the beginning of March, they offer this amulet to the girls they love… In Moldavia, part of Romania, all persons can receive a little March amulet. Red means love for everything that is beautiful and white symbolizes the pureness and health of the snowdrops, the first flowers that appear in spring. That is the first celebration of spring in Romania.
