CNN ARTICLE DISCUSSION antiquities/index.html antiquities/index.html Recall our conversation about cultural cleansing here and in other countries. What did you think of this article in relation to that discussion? Why does ISIS destroy artifacts? What about other historical examples of destroying culture? Why do regimes do this? Why is it important for us to preserve culture?

EXAMPLE OF A FOLKTALE “THATAKA’S STORY” Excerpt from The Ramayana by R. K. Narayan Modern version of ancient collection of sacred stories from India. Book as a whole is mythology; this portion takes form of a folktale Many of these stories were told orally overtime Instructions: Take out a piece of paper and draw the story as you imagine it while I read.

A NOTE ON HINDUISM AND THE CHARACTERS IN THIS STORY… Hinduism focuses largely on death and rebirth (life as a cycle) Three most prominent gods are Brahma the Creator, Vishnu the Preserver, and Shiva the Destroyer Premise of the story… The ten-headed king of demons, Ravana, has obtained incredible powers and is destroying goodness. Brahma and Shiva gave Ravana many of his powers, so they were powerless to help. The gods went to Vishnu, who told them than Ravana could only be defeated by a human. Vishnu prophesied that he would be reincarnated as a man and would defeat Ravana. Vishnu is reborn as Rama, the main character of The Ramayana. He goes on a long journey with a sage named Viswamithra. As he travels, he runs into people who have been imprisoned or are waiting for the incarnation of Vishnu.

BRAINSTORM ACTIVITY Do some research on your own or brainstorm with your peers. Come up with a current event about which you would like to write your folktale. You will need to attach an article about the current event you chose to your prewrite.
