Elementary school teachers (also called primary school teachers) teach children from kindergarten up to the sixth grade. They introduce children to the educational basics: numbers, language, science, and social studies. They also help children develop into healthy, confident, socially aware young people, and work closely with parents to help the children reach their full potential.

 Elementary school teachers usually work independently, in classrooms of 15 to 30 students.  Teachers work a 9 to 10-month school year, with 2 or 3 months off over the summer.  Teachers work between 8 and 10 hours a day on weekdays.

Working Qualifications All elementary school teachers have to be licensed. All teachers must have at least a bachelor’s degree. All must have to complete an approved teacher education program and a period of supervised practice teaching.

Certification is voluntary, and is available through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). To become nationally certified, candidates submit a portfolio of work and pass a written exam. In many states and school districts, teachers with national certification receive higher salaries or other benefits. Elementary school teachers are employed by public school boards or by private schools. Most public school teachers belong to unions that negotiate wages, benefits, hours, and conditions of employment on their behalf. Experienced elementary school teachers typically earn $35,000 to $80,000 a year. The average starting salary is around $32,000 a year. Public school teachers tend to earn more than private school teachers

I think this is a great job if you really enjoy working with children. You get to work with them for hours everyday and then you also get the satisfaction of knowing that they look up to you to teach them what they need to know for the rest of their life.
