AP Multiple Choice Writing with “A Modest Proposal”

AP Lang Multiple Choice Measures precision of close reading Limits/does not allow for open-ended interpretations Can be demystified by writing questions (process deconstructs the demands of MC and increases understanding of AP Lang MC scope)

AP Lang Multiple Choice Questions TYPES/SCOPE of Questions 1. Comprehension Items 2. Technique/Style Items 3. Inferential/Deductive Items

AP Lang Multiple Choice Questions SCOPE OF QUESTIONS 1. Comprehension Items: very specific “trees” questions about elements that do not require interpretation; syntactical questions like identifying pronoun reference or a word that a phrase modifies, meaning of a word or phrase, etc. With sources, the comprehension questions may ask about the type of information included in endnotes or footnotes.

AP Lang Multiple Choice Questions SCOPE OF QUESTIONS 2. Technique Items: also “trees” questions, focus on rhetorical strategies and style (modes, tropes, schemes) and usually refer to specific lines in the passage. An item may ask which of the following elements of style are included in paragraph X (very often an except) question; often include terminology (oxymoron, parallel structure, accumulation of detail, cause/effect, etc.) and may ask about purpose or effect of particular sentences.

AP Lang Multiple Choice Questions SCOPE OF QUESTIONS 3. Inferential or Deductive Items: forest questions, require synthesis of some elements of the passage and often refer to entire passage. Questions that ask about tone or purpose are typical of these big-picture questions.

Writing AP Lang Multiple Choice Questions with “A Modest Proposal” In study groups, you will write 3 questions – one of each type. You will provide only 3 answer choices/responses: a correct answer, a close runner-up, and a plausible distractor. Mimic AP MC formatting. For each answer choice, provide written justifications: why the right answer is right, and why the others are wrong but plausible. Choose a group leader who will compile your questions/answers in word document: class period, group members names, TNR, 12 pt. font, SS. to me by 8:00 p.m. Sunday, March 6 th. Do not include justifications in ; bring those to class on Monday, March 7 th. Monday March 7 th - Your questions/answers will be projected. Class will critique/confirm and you will defend using your pre-written justifications. Use practice AP Exam packets if necessary for example questions during work time on Friday, March 4 th. (Assignment posted on SWIFT, take pic, or retrieve hard copy after school in needed)
