Opposites Attract (Warm Up) Use numbers to name the opposite of each of the following: ½ Gaining 5 pounds. 6.Spending $25 7.Descending 1,200 feet ½ $25 +1,200

Integers What is an accountant? An accountant is a person who keeps records of money for people.

Integers When business records were kept by hand, accountants used red ink for expenses and black ink for income. What are expenses? What is income? Expenses are the money that is spent or that goes out of the business. Income is the money that comes into the business or the money that is earned.

Integers If your income was greater than your expenses you were “in the black”. If your expenses were greater than your income you were “in the red”.

Integers Julia has this problem to solve: Linda owes her sister $6 for helping her cut the lawn. She earns $4 delivering papers with her brother. Is she “in the red” or “in the black”? Discuss with your partner how you would solve this problem. Share your findings with the whole group. Answers will vary. Find value in the thoughts of all students.

Integers Julia uses red and black chips to model income and expenses. Each black chip represents +1 dollar of income. Each red chip represents -1 dollar of income (which is the same as expenses).

-6 + (+4) = -2 Julia then makes zero pairs by pairing up positive and negative chips. Julia concluded that Linda was “in the red”. In your own words, explain why.

Integers On your chip board, demonstrate another way to represent -2. Answers will vary.

Integers We can use the concept that accountants use and Julia’s method to add integers. Solve the following using chips (+4) = (+4) =

Integers Solve the following using chips = ? -5 + (-6) = (-6) =

Integers Write an algorithm for adding integers with like signs. Work with your partner. Possible answer: When adding integers with like signs, add the digits and give the sum the common sign. What is an algorithm? An algorithm is a set of rules for performing a procedure.

Integers Solve the following using chips (+4) = ? -7 + (+4) = (+4) =

Integers Solve the following using chips (-4) = ? +8 + (-4) = (-4) =

Integers Possible answer: When adding integers with unlike signs, subtract the digits and give the sum the sign of the larger digit. With your partner, write an algorithm for adding integers with different signs.

Integers What differences did you notice when adding integers with like signs and adding integers with unlike signs on the chip board? Answers will vary.
