6.03

Do Now – Translate! The position of a box of cookies on a table is represented by the points (-2, 4) (-3, -1) (0, -2) and (1, 3). If the box is moved 3 units to the right and 2 units down, what will the new coordinates be? Determine the answer without graphing.

Do Now – Answer (-2, 4) (-3, -1) (0, -2) and (1, 3) 3 units to the right = x units down = y – 2 (1, 2) (0, -3) (3, -4) and (4, 1)

Objective Today, I will identify and compare three different transformations: translations, rotations, and reflections.

Group Problems Complete the front side of the worksheet with your team. You have 8 minutes. Readers read Group Leaders facilitate the discussion Supply Managers make sure everyone has the same information on their papers Reporters ask questions when needed and let me know when your team is done

Transformations! Transformation: movement Three kinds! 1. Translation: sliding a point horizontally or vertically. 2. Rotation: turning a shape around a point. 3. Reflection: flipping an object.

Translation sliding a point horizontally or vertically Sliding Cookie Dough! Start at (-5,1) End at (6, -5) How much did it translate? Right: 11 (+11) Down: 6 ( -6)

Rotation Turning a shape around a point Rotating Cookie Dough! How much does it turn? Clockwise 90˚ Clockwise 180 ˚ Clockwise 270 ˚ or Counter Clockwise 90 ˚

Reflection Flipping an object Reflecting Cookie Dough! What axis is it reflected on? Y – axis! X – axis !

Table Time! Transformation: Type of move: Direction: Units: Translation Slide Horizontal or vertical # moved Right, left, up or down Rotation Turn Clockwise or Counter clockwise 90°, 180 °, or 270 ° Reflection Flip across the x-axis or y-axis none

Closure Review objective: Today, I will identify and compare three different transformations: translations, rotations, and reflections.
