Cooperation and Interoperability Lenore Bajona, Robert M. Branton Ocean Tracking Network

The Ocean Tracking Network (OTN) is a leading example of cooperation and interoperability between national and international centers of expertise in ocean observation. OTN Funding $168-million research and technology development initiative headquartered at Dalhousie University, in Halifax Nova Scotia. Starting in 2008… Study area: project of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) providing infrastructure to collect comprehensive data on sea animals in relation to the ocean’s changing … Design Description: A wide range of aquatic species are tagged with small electronic transmitter — salmon, tuna, whales, sharks, penguins, crabs, and seals, to name a few … 2

OTN is Global Following on from the Census of Marine Life (CoML), OTN has the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) mandate for integrating acoustic receiver array data from all of the world oceans plus the Mediterranean Sea and Great Lakes. 3

Technical Overview Satellites acoustic mooring assemblies 2 acoustic tags 1 satellite tags 3 acoustic receivers 1 Photo Credits: oceantrackingnetwork.org oceantrackingnetwork.org

Policies and Guideline OTN uses Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) principles and guidelines as a basis for policies covering the sharing of data from acoustic transmitters and receivers, more than 85% of which are owned by collaborators. 5 OTN Transmitters = 5,315 Receivers = 4,035 ; Collaborator Transmitters = 29,995 Receivers = 4,888

Secure and Easy To Use - Public OTN’s secure and easy to use Internet based data system continues to grow in content, functionality, accessibility and connectivity. 6

Secure and Easy To Use - Private Restricted Project Repository Folders containing PI provided Metadata, Data and OTNDC Provided Detection Extractions Product 7

Data are Contributor Owned Data are acquired, quality controlled and managed on a by contributor basis whereas production of public metadata and data are pre-scheduled. Current holdings include: 59M detections by 79 receiver arrays of 35K (tagged) animals (69 species) released by 109 tracking projects (of 117 in database). 8

Open to New Contributors In addition OTN has 16M detections of 14K unknown tags listed in ocean scale mystery tag reports whereby previously unknown trackers can become associated with OTN. 9

Targets for New Integrative Products 1) International Oceanographic Commission (IOC), Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS) 10

11 2) World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Global Telecommunication System (GTS) Targets for New Integrative Products

3) United States, Integrated Ocean Observing System (US IOOS) 12 Targets for New Integrative Products

New Involvements Underway are: – entry of OTN Arctic and Antarctic collections into the ArcticNet - Polar Data Catalog – application for inclusion in the International Council for Science’s World Data System (ICSU-WDS) 13

What to do about OTN’s other data? Moving beyond the data warehouse Community Data Other Data Accepted by journals e.g. Nature, Evolution Data packages may contain > 1 dataset DOIs permanently linked to published paper Embargos allowed Courtesy Lenore Bajona - OTNCourtesy Michelle Lloyd, Kate Crosby - CHONe Versions of these slides were presented at recent CASRAI 2013 Conference in Ottawa. 14
