PERSONALITY Understanding your professor’s personality: Each personality type has a natural preference for how to learn. (More discussion on this in Cpt. 6.) Making the effort to understand how your professor operates and how you operate is key to your success in college. College is a “dress rehearsal” for life after school. It is also a must to understand your boss and your co-workers’ personalities to ensure success.

COMMUNICATION It is a two-way process: The process is interactive- we act as both the sender and the receiver/listener during the course of any conversation Message is carried/Feedback sent = verbally and nonverbally Developing effective communication skills CAN improve our relationships with others- at home, in school, at the workplace, in social or business situations and in everyday interactions with the general public.

COMMUNICATION To do so, we must develop specific skills in BOTH parts of the communication process: SEE chart (I Statements….)

COMMUNICATION STYLES Which one best describes your style?

COMMUNICATION STYLES Why does the assertive approach result in better open communication & better relationships? It allows us to express our feelings, needs, opinions or preferences in a directed and honest manner Does not allow for threatening, harming, putting down or manipulating others This style does NOT guarantee that our needs and wishes will always be met but ensures that we have expressed those needs in an appropriate manner The rights of BOTH parties in this exchange have been acknowledged and protected

Assertive Communication Approach Developing this behavior is a learned skill and takes time This type of communication also depends on the specific situations you face To your assertiveness levels = must consciously practice using assertive communication skills One way to better assertive communication skills = practicing using the “I” message format or “I” messages: COMMUNICATION STYLES
