In F1 money generated from sponsorship accounts for almost 50% of the revenue going into the sport.”  F1 research and development (R&D) costs in particular have risen steadily over the past decade.  Williams spend almost half (£48.1 million) of their annual budget of almost £100 million in this area of their business.  Meanwhile, the privately-owned Red Bull team spent almost £70 million on R&D last year, though it’s annual budget exceeded £200 million.

 Given that Red Bull have romped to three consecutive constructor titles, does this suggest that, like so many other sports nowadays, Formula One success is a direct function of the amount of money thrown at its participants?  With events like the Olympics, do the most wealthy countries do best? How much more money do some countries put in to their training budgets? Is that fair competition?

The Irish Times reported the agreement to be worth as much as $250 million over 10 years for the two-time major tournament winner. 

 The company hope that the sports star/team wearing a particular product/ using it will encourage fans to buy it.  The money from sponsorship enables individual and teams to compete at the highest levels.
