Childhood. Jimmy Carter’s Father, James Carter Senior, was a local public official. And his mother, Bessie, was a peace corp. volunteer. Jimmy grew up working the fields to bring in extra money for himself. The Carters were one of the more prosperous family's in the community. During his teen years, his father expanded his business dealings as a peanut farmer. Oct. 1st 1924

Educational Background. James Earl Carter attended Georgia Institute of Technology. In 1943 he was accepted into the U.S Naval Academy from which he graduated from in After Naval Academy he attended Sub-marine School and was stationed aboard the Pomfret Sub-marine. He then studied Nuclear Physics. He left the Navy in in 1953 after his fathers death at the age of 59.

Before becoming President, Carter expanded his fathers Peanut Business, making him very wealthy. He then Married Rosalynn Smith and had four children, James, John, Donnel, and a daughter, Amy. Soon Jimmy became a leader of the community serving on county boards supervising education, hospital authority, and the library. In 1962 he won the election to the Georgia state senate. In 1966 he won yet another election, this time he became Georgia’s 76th Governor. On Dec. 12, 1974, he announced he candidacy for the President of the United States. He won his party’s nomination on the ballot, and was elected president on Nov. 2nd 1976.

During his Presidency, Jimmy Carter oversaw a reorganization of several executive branches to match his domestic priorities, including the Department of Education, Health, and welfare. During his term he created a new cabinet-level Department of Energy. He also planned to coordinate a national energy conservation to minimize America’s reliance on imported oil. Carters most “noteworthy” accomplishments came from the field of foreign affairs. He established relationships with the Peoples Republic of China and made good on a long- standing American promise to return control to the Panama Canal to the Panamanians. He also persuaded President Anwar Sadat of Egypt and Prime Minister Menachem Begin of Israel to end their 31-year state of war between there countries.

Since leaving office, Carter has been the most active President ever. In 1982 he became a Professor at Emory University in Atlanta Georgia. During his time at the university, he founded The Carter Center to resolve conflict, promote democracy, and protect human rights. Since 1989 the Carter Center has overseen over 60 elections in over 25 countries. President Carter has long served on the board of directors for Habitat for Humanity, which builds homes for needy in the USA. In 2002 Jimmy Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He is the third American President to be given that award. Since being out of office Carter has written of twenty books and done three films. He currently resides in his birth town of Plains, Georgia.
