connect communicate collaborate GÉANT has just about been Reloaded! Michael Enrico Chief Technology Officer, DANTE TERENA Networking Conference Maastricht, 3 rd - 6 th June 2013

connect communicate collaborate Agenda GÉANT Today some reminders What’s happening right now rolling out new equipment, fibre infrastructure improvements GÉANT Tomorrow new services, features coming soon, potential new users and unusual apps 22

connect communicate collaborate  40 European Countries  Dark Fibre + DWDM  Hybrid network: Routed IP IPv6, multicast, VPN Point-to-point Circuits typically 1Gbps Dedicated Lambdas Full 10Gbps  Bandwidth on Demand  Network monitoring  Security  Mobility/AAI (edu*) To download this map: About GÉANT

connect communicate collaborate A strongly federated e-Infrastructure (from leased circuits to 100Gbps over dedicated fibre) 2012 The GÉANT Service Area is built on a federation of the infrastructures of 32 NRENs with GÉANT acting as the backbone

connect communicate collaborate We selected… (for transmission) DTN-X solution from Infinera Why? Photonic integration Large pools of “virtualised” BW Ease of use Excellent service wrap 7

connect communicate collaborate  B/W Virtualization transforms waves into resources A large pool of intelligent capacity  GMPLS allocates resources to service demands Same concept as data center virtualization  Enables shared mesh restoration B/W Virtualization DWDM OTN Switching GMPLS Control Plane B/W Virtualization DWDM OTN Switching GMPLS Control Plane 2x10GbE service demand 100GbE service demand 500Gb/s total 95Gb/s in use 115Gb/s in use 215Gb/s in use Other benefits (efficiency & flexibility through Scalable BW Virtualisation) 8

connect communicate collaborate We selected… (for switching) MX series of IP/MPLS switch/routers from Juniper Why? Supports a wide array of switched services (based on EoMPLS) Includes MP2MP as well as P2P Optimised for Ethernet Supports 100GE 120Gbps/slot (new SCBs) Also good at routing… …and ready for “virtualisation”… …and SDN 9

connect communicate collaborate New GÉANT DF footprint 10 We also reprocured the GÉANT fibre footprint

connect communicate collaborate New GÉANT DF footprint 11 New GÉANT fibre footprint To Frankfurt To Milan Example of improved fibre diversity

connect communicate collaborate Converged (P-OTS) platform IP Transmission platform Switching platform Results in… improved service access & nice options to “converge” FibreLeased circuits Packet transport DWDM IP GR BETRIL EELV LT SK HRSIUK NL DE FR ES PTDKCZ AT ITHUCH RO BGPL IE LU MTCY “Routerless”“Fully featured”Off fibre net IP/MPLS only NREN POPs RU Circuits over GÉANT Leased circuits MKRSME 12 “Converged” (packet transport) platform “Fully featured” “Better featured” ALL now “Better featured”

connect communicate collaborate An interesting application… (this one is of protection in the [DWDM+OTN] layer)

connect communicate collaborate 100G Trunk Protection GÉANT “Western Ring” consists of 5 links each running 100GE Upgrade Path (near term)? Upgrade all five trunks to 2x100GE OR… FR UK NL DE 100G CH UK NL DE 100G FR CH UK NL DE 2x100G FR CH

connect communicate collaborate 100G Trunk Protection GÉANT “Western Ring” consists of 5 links each running 100GE Upgrade Path (near term)? Upgrade all five trunks to 2x100GE OR… Add a “direct” fully protected link between two sites UK NL DE 100G FR CH 100G FR UK NL DE CH working path prot/rest path

connect communicate collaborate 100G Trunk Protection GÉANT “Western Ring” consists of 5 links each running 100GE Upgrade Path (near term)? Add a “direct” fully protected link between two sites If there is a fibre cut between CH & DE the “direct” link between CH & NL will get restored dynamically in ~50ms (with 1:1 protection) The IP traffic will use the same physical path it would have used if the ring was 2x100GE There will be no increase in traffic on IP link FR-UK or UK-NL or FR-CH Traffic between CH & DE will go via NL making CH only 2 IP hops away rather than 4 FR UK NL DE CH working path prot/rest path
